Job Summary

The Recreation Director for the Elmwood Community Center (E.C.C.) works under the guidance of the Director of the Department of Recreation, in coordination with Department of Recreation Main Office Staff, and Recreation Directors to manage and create relationships with Community-Based Organizations (CBO) that provide programming, supplies, collaboration, opportunities, and funding that benefit children, adults, families, and other members of the Department of Recreation. The Recreation Director of E.C.C. will meet with, and establish relationships with non-profit, governmental, and private organizations that align with the mission and vision of the Director of Recreation, the Department of Recreation, Mayor Brett Smiley, and the City Council. The Recreation Director of E.C.C. will host community meetings in collaboration with the Department of Recreation, inter-departmental agencies, and CBO to understand constituents needs in the community. Establishing consistent funding sources for recreation activities and programming is extremely important to this role. This position will be a client-facing liaison for the Department of Recreation and the community as the department expands their ability to provide alternative programming through well-managed CBO relationships.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven ability to communicate with, coordinate, and manage multiple community-based organizations. The successful candidate will also have excellent time-management, communication, relationship building skills, and attention to detail.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Meet with Director of Recreation and Recreation Directors weekly to understand programming and events that are needed in each recreation center.
2. Work with current recreation partners to understand their relationship with the department and assess their current status and/or work to increase their capacity with the Department of Recreation.
3. Collaborate with the Office of Community Relations on a monthly basis to ensure that the Department of Recreation programming is available to the community.
4. Works with the Department of Recreation Media Content Manager to update recreation programing offered through CBO and other partners.
5. Applies for grants and other funding that helps the Department of Recreation & the Elmwood Community Center fund community partnerships and programming for members.
6. Manages grant processes and requirements for awarded funding at the Elmwood Community Center.
7. Communicates regularly with the Department of Arts, Culture, and Tourism to maintain programming and opportunities for the arts at the E.C.C.
8. Hosts monthly Community Meetings both online and in-person to communicate recreation initiatives, E.C.C. programming and partnerships, and survey the community.
9. Attend community-based meetings to ensure communication and collaboration with neighbors and surrounding communities.
10. Work with the Director of Recreation and other advisors to develop the E.C.C. Operational Plan that includes the C.B.O. Incubator System.
11. Serve as a direct line or connection to the needs of residents that will increase coalitions among community leaders throughout neighborhoods.
12. Ensure the E.C.C. has access to existing initiatives provided by City Hall from the Mayor’s Administration and City Council.
13. Work closely with elected leaders to ensure that needs and resources are best coordinated for the improvement of residents within the assigned targeted areas.
14. Works closely with the Media Content Manager to ensure constant communication and outreach on all of the department’s social media outlets and website.
15. Supervises and works closely with the Coordinator of Community-Based Organizations in the Department of Recreation to facilitate and manage systems and processes for the E.C.C. and other recreation centers that benefit the community.
16. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in marketing, communications, English, public policy, or a closely related field of study; or a minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in public relations, marketing, advertising, media relations, public administration, or communications; or a combination of substantially equivalent education and experience.
2. Familiarity with the Microsoft suite of products including, but not limited to Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft SharePoint, and other equivalent software or tools.
3. Experience with project management software.
4. Strong written and communications skills.
5. The ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the department and community.
6. Proven ability to fund-raise and apply for grant funding opportunities.
7. Ability to work on a very flexible schedule which may include nights or weekend events.
8. Must have ability to successfully work independently and in a team environment reliably to achieve outcomes within targeted timelines.
9. Strong collaborative, decision making, organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
10. Proven ability to identify areas of opportunity in recreation centers that can be shared with the public and interdepartmentally.
11. Must have curiosity, initiative, and a positive approach to the work.
12. Demonstrated history of taking initiative in managing complex projects and working effectively in a fast-paced environment.
13. Bilingual (Spanish) strongly preferred.
14. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
