Field Assistant III

Department Background: Cornell University scientists based in Geneva, Ithaca, and Fredonia, New York, conduct applied research at the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory (CLEREL) aimed at increasing the profitability of Lake Erie region grape growers while maintaining sustainable practices in the vineyard. Research-based information is then provided to the grape industry through the Lake Erie Regional Grape Program, a joint effort of Cornell University and Penn State University.

Position Summary:

Our technical support staff works with faculty researchers to study a broad range of topics to optimize grape productivity and quality, with the ultimate goal of maximizing the profitability of the growers and industries in the region.

Under general supervision of Director, (A) Provide technical and research support to CLEREL Project Investigators (PIs) and Director, (B) Participate in completing vineyard, farm, and facility operations with specific attention to station farm equipment, implements, and vehicles, and (C) Coordinate CLEREL pesticide use and reporting.

Required Qualifications:

Formal training beyond a high school diploma of one to two years of college coursework, Associates Degree or equivalent, and three to four years' experience in similar type work. Knowledge of viticulture practices and vineyard pest management, as well as reporting requirements for pesticide applications. Must possess or be able to obtain a commercial pesticide applicator license within six months of employment. Prior and proven experience with operation of farm equipment and other field machinery. Must have and maintain a valid driver and commercial driver license (CDL), and undergo a successful driving background and regular background check as well as meet all requirements for a CDL, including passing a pre-employment drug test and being subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must possess sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills, meticulous record keeping and ability to work with diverse personalities. Must be able to work under pressure with a great deal of initiative. Must have excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects. Ability to work well with others is required while creating a high-quality and respectful work environment. Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external constituencies is a must.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors' Degree in horticulture, plant science or other science related field. 3-4 years' experience working in a research environment, and strong agricultural research experience. Proven experience in vineyard farm management and mechanized vineyard operations.
