Job description

Summary

The Fleet Maintenance Manager – ATS Trailers is directly responsible for the entire fleet of trailers. They will be the primary point of contact between Operations, Safety, Procurement, and the Maintenance teams with system-wide oversight to best manage and coordinate maintenance-related activities on and offsite for new, used, and for-sale assets, to deliver high Driver and Customer experiences. The Fleet Maintenance Manager will serve as the subject matter and technical expert for ATS trailers to ensure assets are maintained to ATS standards and FMCSA regulations while minimizing downtime & help to drive methods to prevent downtime, so assets are available and operational.

Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or 5-7 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in the industry.
  2. Two to five years of supervisory experience required. 
  3. Firm understanding of the transportation industry with a strong working knowledge of diesel maintenance and repair principles.
  4. Thorough understanding of OSHA and Hazmat regulations, and general shop safety.
  5. Strong planning and problem-solving skills; able to identify and resolve problems promptly. 
  6. Thorough understanding of planned and unplanned maintenance and repair processes.
  7. Thorough understanding and knowledge of FMCSA Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance regulations.
  8. Experience with the tools of the trade to maintain and service equipment such as maintenance procedures, technical support, and reliability improvement.
  9. Ability to perform effectively under limited guidance/assistance from functional leadership.
  10. Strong interpersonal skills; able to establish trust and rapport with all levels of internal and external staff, along with outside vendors.  Able to relate effectively to diverse cultures.
  11. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  12. Able to gather and analyze large volumes of data and information to assist functional leadership in developing standard operating procedures and workflow instructions.
  13. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  14. Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Monitor daily ATS trailer assets that are out of service at all ATS shop locations. 
  2. Provide direct assistance and support to return trailers to active service to significantly reduce downtime.
  3. Serve as the direct point of contact for Operations and Maintenance teams to effectively manage, coordinate, and provide support for major upcoming planned and unplanned OTR maintenance and repairs events. 
  4. Collaborate with Safety and Maintenance teams to ensure all ATS trailers comply with FMCSA Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance regulations.
  5. Provide direct oversight of the new asset trailer prep Cost Per Unit (CPU) and active asset operating Cost Per Mile (CPM).
  6. Provide the lowest cost to the highest value possible by identifying any repeat issues and providing solutions to eliminate them when possible.
  7. Utilize and monitor VM and telematics data to identify CPU/CPM reduction opportunities.
  8. Participate in continuous improvement activities by reviewing, changing, and improving processes in line with changing customer expectations and organizational goals.
  9. Resolve customer concerns related to maintenance; develop strong relationships with key stakeholders through frequent and professional communication.
  10. Ensure the volume of work produced meets company standards and ensures customer satisfaction.
  11. Identify trends and initiate changes and/or improvements necessary to achieve goals and objectives while ensuring customer needs are met without interruption to service levels.
  12. Ensure effective problem management processes are followed to identify root causes and prevent reoccurring problems. 
  13. Demonstrates, by their daily actions, ATS Mission, Vision, and Values in a consistent, effective, and reliable manner.
  14. Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required. 
  15. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Constantly uses hand tools and power hand tools to repair equipment, manipulate parts into position, or enter data into the computer. Constantly inspecting and assessing equipment to determine whether to replace or repair and the best approach to replace/repair. Intermittently communicates with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures, and timelines.

  1. Loud noises constantly require hearing protection.
  2. Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
  3. Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, and odors constantly.
  4. Situations requiring eye protection and steel-toed boots.
