POSITION SUMMARY: Successfully promote and support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas as guided by the Catholic Social Teachings by providing services through the Citizenship Education program. The Citizenship Instructor will teach Citizenship ESL classes to refugees and immigrants in the Kansas City community in order to assist them in becoming United States citizens. This full-time teaching position will assist the Citizenship Program Coordinator by teaching classes, taking attendance, completing student record-keeping, managing volunteer tutors, and providing general classroom and program support to staff members while working directly with adult students. This position will teach afternoon and evening classes Monday - Thursday. EEO.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Teach High Beginning and High Intermediate levels with provided lesson plans and activities.
- Prepare and organize all materials for lesson plans and class activities.
- Develop curriculum to fit grant requirements and facilitate educational gains.
- Administer assessment testing.
- Facilitate quarterly student field trips.
- Volunteer coordination - lead tutors in one-on-one and small group lessons during class times.
- Work with Program Coordinator to coordinate volunteer schedules, attendance, and training.
- Assist in maintenance of student files, assessment scoring, data entry, and reporting documents for grant compliance.
- Recruit new students and volunteer tutors for the Citizenship Program as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Must complete VIRTUS training, background screening, drug testing, and any ongoing training as required
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field; TESOL certification required or equivalent certification
- 1 year experience teaching English language learners preferred
- Enthusiasm and passion to prepare refugees and immigrants to pass the naturalization interview and become U.S. citizens
- Experience with volunteer management preferred
- Experience working with diverse backgrounds and families experiencing poverty preferred
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and limited English proficiency
- As an evening position, must be available to work evenings
- While the position itself will be afternoons/evenings, must be willing to attend a few initial required new hire trainings which would be in the mornings.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office and related programs.
- Must be flexible in work schedule.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s license, dependable transportation, current vehicle insurance and a verified safe driving record.
- Must be able to pass DOT screening if driving an agency vehicle requiring DOT certification.

Will be expected to drive regularly, including highway and evening driving, to accomplish duties.
