Position Summary:
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Researcher II for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Performs highly complex, advanced level experiments and research at the Board of Public Utilities' ( BPU ) Dual-Use Pilot-scale Program sites and the research trials that will be conducted by the Rutgers Agrivoltaics Program, using various new and advanced techniques in crop science.
- Documents work performed, maintains databases, develops information, and prepares editorial input for research papers and technical reports for BPU and other external constituents.
- Provides resolution to a diverse range of complex problems that may require great creativity. Independently manages all the operations of the field trials, including staff and the procurement, operation, and maintenance of highly specialized equipment.
- Teaches, trains, and supervises field technicians and students, and coordinates with farm staff on laboratory processes and equipment.
- Interfaces with the farmers and farm management staff.
- Coordinates research plans and establishes and refines protocols with the RAP researchers.
- Prepares a wide variety of reports, provides science-based content for the RAP website, manages grant funds, and acts as a point of contact and subject matter expert for both internal and external constituents.
- Completes work independently, with broadly defined work objectives and limited review of overall results.
- Performs professional work that requires specialized to general knowledge of crop production and a solid understanding, use, and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology, and applied bases in crop research.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- This position requires a minimum of a Master of Science degree in a related scientific specialty or discipline including; plant science, environmental science, or engineering, or related scientific field, and a basic understanding of, and interest in, renewable energy.
- It also requires a minimum of three years of relevant professional research experience in a crop-based research function, knowledge and understanding of research principles and practices, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.

Equipment Utilized:
- The successful candidate is expected to be fluent in the use of the software programs that are part of the Microsoft Office suite.
- In addition, knowledge about software tools for project planning and tracking will be helpful.
- For the research component of this position, the successful candidate will be involved in managing data collection practices.
- The skills required for this portion of the position can be acquired through on-the-job training in consultation with various RAP committee members.
- Field trials, materials, and equipment will be maintained in a clean, safe manner in accordance with established university procedures.
- Visual documentation of the Rutgers trials and BPU Pilot Program Sites' construction and crop trials will be required and knowledge of photography equipment and filming techniques to best record this information will be important to effectively perform the job.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- This position will require outdoor activities in hot, cold, windy, and wet weather, although the successful candidate will not be expected to stay in those conditions for long periods of time.
- Working during the early morning, evening and weekends may be occasionally required to gather important crop or environmental data, as well as to perform outreach activities.
- While making crop observations, some walking, kneeling and bending over will be required.
- The successful candidate will also be required to lift 35 pounds of materials or equipment from time to time.
