General Statement of Job
The Upward Bound Program is grant-funded through the U.S. Department of Education and works with high school students to help them prepare for post-secondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school, attend, and complete post-secondary education. A significant part of our program is the five-week summer College Simulated Experience. During the summer CSE, students take high school-level classes that will help prepare them for next year’s classes and ACT prep. Classes are created with the idea of giving the students a jumpstart for the next school year. During the five weeks, students take classes during the day, live in the MSSU residence halls, and participate in activities similar to college students. The Upward Bound program at Missouri Southern serves approximately 70 students from 5 are high schools; Carl Junction, Carthage, East Newton, Joplin, and Webb City.
We are looking for dynamic teachers to teach part-time in the areas of Math, Science, Engineering, Business, History, Language Arts, Fine Arts, and Physical Education.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
Provide instruction in CSE Courses
Revise and or create subject-specific curriculum aligned with UB and the Missouri Learning Standards
Select materials for themed designed courses
Develop and submit lesson and assessment plans
Provide appropriate classroom management
Maintain student records in a secure and confidential manner
Provide regular grade checks to Upward Bound staff
Complete formal and informal assessments for each class and student
Chaperone and participate in field trips and cultural trips if assigned
Attend Upward Bound staff training, weekly meetings, and post-summer meeting
Other duties as assigned
Education, Experience, and Licenses
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university is required with teacher certification; 2 years of teaching experience in a relevant subject area, experience working with students from diverse and disadvantaged students preferred
