This position provides the opportunity to lead Environmental Compliance and Sustainability at the largest production facility within Beam Suntory.
Role Responsibilities
Role Responsibilities
Manages and oversees all aspects of environmental compliance tasks for regulated sites by coordinating and supporting all permitting, sampling, reporting and recordkeeping functions for the operations including but not limited to:
- Air programs: Title V Permits, Air Emission Inventories, and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting requirements.
- Water programs: Stormwater, groundwater, wastewater treatment permit, sewer pre-treatment permit, water withdrawal permits.
- Waste programs: Recycling, universal waste, non-hazardous waste, hazardous waste as well as periodic waste disposal from routine maintenance & construction projects.
- Auditing of facilities against regulations, permit conditions, BSI global standards… including coordination of any follow up corrective action planning with operations.
- Permitting project management: coordination of efforts between operations, third party consultants/engineers and regulatory agencies for new permits, renewals of permits, and any required modifications as required by regulations and permit conditions; permitting may include and require attendance of regulatory meetings, public hearings and community engagement; work through closure/post closure activities as needed with operations, legal, risk management and third party consultants;
- Noncompliance events: management of any notices of violation, follow up reporting, communication to leadership; mitigate ongoing risk; manage follow up corrective action planning.
- Maintain all required records through the Compliance and Performance tracking system and provide regular monthly, quarterly and annual status reporting data to corporate as requested.
- Regulatory Policy Updates: subject matter expert for region related to environmental and permitting. Working with third party consultants, associations and government agencies maintain up to date information on regulatory, guidance or policy changes which may impact operations and communicate to Company leadership team. May require attendance of meetings, writing of position statements or submission of comments to regulatory changes. Provide technical support and expertise in such discussions.
- Corporate Interactions: Identify compliance risks and strategically utilize internal controls necessary to ensure legal and other requirements are effectively managed to prevent and minimize risks; report any and all compliance issues to Company leadership;
- Serve as the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Representative (EMR) and works collaboratively with other Integrated Management System representatives (Safety, Quality, etc.).
- Continuous Improvement: provide technical review on projects, provide recommendations related to environmental compliance requirements.
- Training and Support: provide technical information and training to operations; provide relief support for key roles as needed, complete special projects/assignments as required by leadership; provide expertise on key projects and committees as needed;
- Communicate and report compliance and performance to goals on a monthly basis.
- Provide feedback and support to other departments to assist in improvement of compliance program development, best management practices, standard work instructions, and overall improvement to company policies and programs.
- Support new construction and acquisition integration as it relates to environmental permit and regulatory requirements.

In addition to Environmental Compliance this position is responsible for ensuring the business is fully compliant with current, and future, energy and environmental legislation and targets, both internal and external, ensuring that Beam Suntory goes beyond compliance in the attainment of all environmental and sustainability objectives and targets.
- Act as the sustainability subject matter expert (SME) on best practices to manage compliance and reduce energy, water, and waste. Develop strategies and implementation plans for Energy and Water optimization, Carbon reduction, Climate Change, sustainability management, packaging and waste reduction.
- Work with others to develop project ideation, validate cost savings and execute projects related to the reduction of energy usage and the associated carbon footprint in existing and new systems, the reduction of the water footprint, and the optimization of all process and co-product streams towards creation of a sustainable business operation.
- Develop energy, carbon, water, packaging, and waste key performance indicators (KPI) and report on benchmarks.
- Monitor and track current fuel, electricity, water, wastewater, recycling, and disposal costs. Complete utility rate structure analysis and reporting.
- Participate in capital planning, developing scopes, creating specifications, cost estimating, cash flow forecasting, presentations for approval, project execution, preparing project specifications for request for proposals (RFP), managing contractors, managing project teams, and status communication. Work with finance, production, and QMD to develop justifications for capital projects and prepare the Capital Authorization Requests {CARs) in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Develop best operating practices for design, maintenance and operation of utility and energy management systems with regards to energy and water use.
- Evaluate, contract, and manage consulting engineers as required.
- Review regulatory proposed changes with regards to energy use and carbon emissions at the Federal/State/Provincial level and evaluate impact to company operations.
- Participate as the company representative in governmental and non-governmental organizations (i.e., Chamber of Commerce Environmental Committee, Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable, etc.) and report to management any impact to the organization.
- Review and evaluate Federal/State/Provincial programs related to grants and rebates on energy reduction projects and programs.
- Engage the production facilities in personal development, mentoring, and training about sustainability activities.
- Interface with engineers to define project scope requirements and incorporate corporate standards with regards to sustainability.
- Assist in the development of new installation techniques and standards. Troubleshoot technical issues related to sustainability equipment and processes. Manage technical documents related to sustainability standards and other guidance.
- Prepare and communicate sustainability presentations to management, site visit reports, meeting minutes, schedules and routine status updates for sustainability projects. Act as the main contact with the BSI sustainability global team.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree (or higher) in: Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering or relevant scientific discipline. Master’s degree preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- Ability to work toward professional certifications strongly desired.
- Minimum 7 plus years of progressive experience in environmental management and permitting at manufacturing site.
- Expertise and extensive knowledge of EPA or applicable state regulations including but not limited to: CAA, CWA, RCRA, CERCLA, TSCA.
- Deadline driven with excellent organizational skills.
- Advanced computer skills with proficiency and working knowledge in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook. And ability to work with third party environmental management software systems.
- Capability to handle multiple tasks and work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Candidates must be comfortable with a fast paced, opportunity filled work environment.
- Maintain work by effectively using root-cause problem solving skills… as a leader or a member of a collaborative team.
- Ability to develop processes and procedures as well as initiate the implementation of tasks, preventive, and corrective actions.
- A quick learner with solid work habits who works well under pressure with constant re-prioritization of duties.
- Maintains the highest levels of integrity and confidentiality regarding company information.
- Must be fluent in English; second language is a plus but not required. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and written, and explain technical concepts or innovations to technical and non-technical employees.
- Must have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication as well as presentation skills with the ability to communicate to all levels within the organization.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, establish priorities, and accomplish goals and objectives.
- Physical requirements: ability to conduct visits and "Gemba" activities throughout the manufacturing site- on grade, below-grade and above-grade working surfaces.
- All applicants must have legal authorization to work in the country in which the manufacturing site is located. The candidate must be able to travel to (and throughout) countries in which BSI has manufacturing locations (travel <25%).
- This is an on-site, day shift position… Monday - Friday. Other work hours may be required in emergency situations.
