Marker Selection Scientist I
Marker Selection Scientist I - Multiple Positions
Purpose:
This position within Precision Genomics works collaboratively with interdisciplinary scientists to deliver genome-wide marker panels for medium and high-density workflows across crops. Role located in Chesterfield, MO (hybrid work possible up to 30%)
Y OUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role , Marker Selection Scientist I (Crop Science) , are:
- Apply genomic/genetics technical expertise for selection and deployment of genome-wide marker panels for medium and high-density genotyping platforms across crops;
- Analyze large genomic datasets through digital tools and scripts for marker selection and performance working with crop breeding scientists and data scientists;
- Collaborate with a team of scientists to improve marker management infrastructure and documentation;
- Be accountable for cross-functional work in multiple platforms/process areas
- Conduct research and contribute to research projects including sample logistics, new technologies, publications, intellectual property, and trade secrets;
- Solve complex problems requiring original thinking and deductive reasoning by using specialized knowledge, the broad application of scientific principles and current literature when identifying and implementing solutions;
- Leverage project management principles to organize work and communicate to key stakeholders;
- Prepare and present written and oral presentations, provide technical recommendations to appropriate peer, stakeholder, and leadership groups;
- Demonstrate commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols and best practices;
- Partner across Precision Genomics, Data Science & Analytics, and IT in Plant Biotech as it relates to genome-wide marker selection and marker management;
- Partner with Global Breeding and Vegetable Breeding to understand breeding objectives for genome-wide marker panels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s OR Master’s, or PhD degree;
- Strong background in genomics, genetics, population genetics, breeding, or related field;
- Ability to independently design experiments, problem solve, troubleshoot, analyze, and interpret data;
- Experience with DNA quantification and detection technologies, molecular marker development, different methods of genotyping and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies;
- Demonstrates basic computational skills and level of experience using R, Python, or other statistical and/or mathematical programming languages;
- Experience with analyzing NGS data, variant calling, population structure analysis and Ensemble imputation;
- Strong written and oral communication skills;
- Thrives on meeting challenges, insists on high-quality deliverables, demonstrates effective problem-solving skills, and can build productive external and internal relationships.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience or Master’s degree with 2 years of experience or PhD (to include industrial or academic experience post-undergraduate);
- Two or more years of genotyping experience;
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams to achieve common goals;
- Skilled in project management principles and strong results orientation with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/priorities simultaneously;
- Experience using Spotfire and RStudio or Jupyter Notebooks.
