DEFINITION
SUPERVISORY OPPPORTUNITY - LIMITED TERM PROGRAM
Hourly Salary: $27.00
Hours per week: 30 hour maximum for approximately 4 to 8 weeks The City of Stockton is hosting its first Student Worker Program to provide high school students with employment experiences with the City of Stockton. The City will hire approximately 10 Student Worker Supervisors (non-high school students) within the following departments: Municipal Utilities, and Public Works. Student Worker Supervisors will oversee the student participants, who will be introduced to the possibilities of pursuing a career with the City. Student Worker Supervisors will oversee the day-to-day operations of the students.
The ideal candidate enjoys and has previous experience working with students. Can communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and students. Candidates must be able to supervise multiple students daily; make sure they are using time wisely; train student workers to complete specific tasks or projects; and set a good example. Student Worker Supervisors must understand and work within their scope of authority and defined guidelines; understand and accurately follow directions; manage and prioritize multiple tasks; and exercise self-control and balanced judgment. Candidates must be flexible, willing to help where needed, attend work regularly, and maintain punctuality.
- 2 years minimum of work experience with youth is highly desirable.
Under the direction of the Municipal Utilities and Public Works department , the Student Worker Supervisor plans, organizes, and coordinates work schedules and provides day-to-day supervision to Student Worker participants. The Student Worker Supervisor's primary role is to oversee staff in the Student Worker Program and to provide hands on work experience and guidance to Student Workers within the community. Overall responsibilities include supervision, mentoring, and providing direction to participants in the Student Worker Program.

This class provides leadership, coaching, training, and general guidance to Student Worker participants.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
- Supervises the performance of Student Worker staff; assigns work duties and projects; reviews the quality and progress of work performed and provides feedback.
- Monitors and ensures staff compliance with departmental policies, procedures, safety practices, and work standards.
- Ensures participants have necessary equipment and supplies to complete assigned duties.
- Prepares and maintains Student Worker work schedules; coordinates and schedules staff review and authorizes time worked.
- Assists in a wide variety of tasks within various City of Stockton departments.
- Performs field, clerical, technical, or paraprofessional work.
- Coordinates special projects with various City departments, specialized staff, other jurisdictions, community-based organizations, or the private sector.
- Assists in gathering, compiling, and analyzing data for entry into spreadsheets or department specified database software.
- Responds to requests for information and provides necessary customer service to members of the community, business organizations, and other City employees.
- Assists in researching and developing oral/written programs or reports for presentation.
- Provides information regarding City and/or department practices, procedures, and events, as well as operates computer systems and related software in the course of work.
- Reads and interprets typical business correspondences, reports, City/departmental policies, and records.
- Adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and department goals.
- May assist and participate in City events at other locations.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
- 2 years minimum of work experience with youth is highly desirable.
Other Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age at time of application.
- Must possess a valid California driver's license.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation which includes a California Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
- Must arrange own transportation to and from work.
- Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) may be required based on the department's requirements. A uniform shirt must be worn during work hours.
