GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Leads the day-to-day operations of the Campus Police, including but not limited to scheduling, policy implementation, response, reporting, and budgeting.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
- Directly supervises and organizes personnel for the Campus Police, providing for their training, motivation, and performance appraisal.
- Develops and manages various community-based crime prevention activities and initiatives.
- Provides for the investigation and maintenance of files on all crimes and injuries to persons and property.
- Maintains contact with representatives or groups of students, faculty, and administrative staff to promote harmonious relations with the college community and the Police Department.
- Maintains harmonious relations with Police bargaining unit representatives, provides expeditious handling of grievances, and participates in contract negotiations.
- Acts as liaison between the College administration and local, County, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Manages and assures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Controls all keys and locking systems on campus.
- Maintains all department records and coordinates all dispatching activities as it relates to communications and records.
- Prepares the budget for the Police for approval by the College administration and operates within the approved budget limits.
- Purchases equipment necessary for the performance of essential job functions of a police officer.
- Coordinates with Facilities Maintenance Department actions for snow removal on all streets and parking lots.
- Provides for the maintenance and operation of all departmental equipment.
- Attends meetings with outside agencies in order to collaborate and share information.
- Prepares and delivers presentations to both campus groups and outside organizations on safety, police operations, etc.
- Collaborates with College Departments to implement security enhancements such as cameras, intrusion control, etc.
- Acts as the Clery Compliance Officer of the College and oversees the Jeanne Clery Act reporting requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree;
- A Commissioned Police Officer in the State of New Jersey under New Jersey statutes in good standing, or the ability to obtain a waiver from the State of New Jersey Police Training Commission, and must maintain this status;
- Seven years’ experience in a supervisory position with the rank of Sergeant or higher in a police department;
- Must have strong leadership and communication skills along with the demonstrated ability to deal with a diverse population in a higher education environment;
- Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office; and
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree;
- Training in the area of cultural diversity; and
- Experience working in a College or University Police department.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
- Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
- Hearing 1: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes. - Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely. - Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Talking 1: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Visual Acuity 2: Including color, depth perception, and field vision.
- Visual Acuity 3: Visual Acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
- Visual Acuity 4: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
- Visual Acuity 5: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines; using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
SCHEDULE:
Monday – Friday, 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Available 24 hours a day, by cell phone, to provide direction when unusual problems occur. Recall to duty as necessary.
