Departmental Overview The Student Leadership & Engagement portfolio within the Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students(reporting into the division of Student Affairs) is at the center of student life at UC Berkeley. It is the campus department primarily responsible for encouraging student involvement and facilitating leadership development opportunities. It serves a critical role in providing administrative, advising, and programmatic support to many student communities, including approximately 1,000 or more registered and sponsored student organizations, student leadership programs, bridges Multicultural Resource Center, Recruitment and Retention Centers, and Queer Alliance Resource Center (QARC).
The Student Leadership and Engagement portfolio promotes a student-centered learning environment by empowering students to pursue their co-curricular interests, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to develop holistically. As student affairs practitioners and scholars, a team of advisors works with diverse communities of students, staff, faculty, and other stakeholders to enhance the overall student experience and educational environment of UC Berkeley. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Engagement, this position is a part of the unit team and has responsibility for developing, leading, and providing advising, support services, and experiential leadership development opportunities to sponsored student organizations, registered student organizations, such as performing arts, LGBTQ+, and/or cultural & identity focused groups on the UC Berkeley campus.

Responsibilities Project Support:
- Provides project support by tracking and following up on action items and helping move Departmental deliverables forward; prepares, edits and modifies documents including research reports, manuscripts, presentations and proposals.
- Manages small projects such as the process documentation of the University.
- Completes registration by providing support to departmental client relationship management software and doing data entry via CalLink.
Policy & Best Practice Work:
- Monitors and analyzes changes in external regulations, legislation, and UC policies for impact on the Campus.
- Researches and summarizes best practices in field.
- Proposes, leads and/or participates on policy and planning committees and working groups.
- Conducts post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements, finer distinctions and/or additional process/policy components.
- Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts.
- Researches organizational structures, policies and procedures and summarizes best practices in field.
- Conceives and designs process improvements based on campus updates and other criteria.
Analytic Work:
- Provides analyses for complex issues involving student clubs and activities, Multicultural Recruitment and Retention centers, Golden Bear Orientation, and student leadership programs.
Admin Work:
- Provides administrative analysis and support, including but not limited to facilitating meetings.
- Maintains schedules and manages calendar for the Associate Dean of Student Engagement.
- Pursues development opportunities for team (trainings, webinars, conferences, professional associations, etc).
- Maintains materials support.
- Prepares and issues administrative and policy directives, regulations, and other instructions for issuance to departments.
- Coordinates implementation with departments that cross organizational lines as needed.
- Researches and drafts complex proposals, reports, briefings, executive summaries, speeches.
- Maintains list of department onboarding, system access, and required trainings for incoming staff.
- Ad-hoc duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications - Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
- Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
- Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
- Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
- Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
- Working knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $31.85 - $42.62.
- This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
- This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 40% remote capability.
