Coordinator, Morrill Engineering Program The Grainger College of Engineering
Job Summary The primary function of this position is to organize academic enrichment and support programs for engineering undergraduates with primary focus on underrepresented minority students (African American, Native American, Hispanic). This position reports to the Senior Assistant Dean in the Grainger College of Engineering's Undergraduate Programs Office who serves as the Director of the Morrill Engineering Program (MEP).
Duties & Responsibilities Academic Support/Retention
- Work with the Center for Academic Resources in Engineering (CARE) and the Academic Redshirt in Science and Engineering (ARISE) program to coordinate academic workshops for study skills, time management and academic planning supporting underrepresented and under resourced students.
- Plan and coordinate summer support programming and early move-in activities (Summer Bridge/EMBARK) including identifying and recruiting participants, hiring/training instructors, resident assistants, classroom assistants, and workshop facilitators.
- Track the academic progress of MEP students and coordinate intervention strategies (such as schedule reviews and midterm outreach) for students considered academically at-risk.
- Assist in the coordination of MEP signature activities including System of Success (SOS) retreat, MEP community building, and annual Senior Send-off/awards celebrations.
- Support the Office of Minority Student Affair's (OMSA's) work in academic support and retention of students at risk.
- Support MEP Mentoring programs for new underrepresented first-year and transfer students.
- Collaborate with Grainger Engineering departments to engage and support underrepresented minority students in their programs.
- Identify, hire, train, and supervise undergraduate students to support retention activities as needed.
Recruitment
- Assist engineering staff in the outreach and marketing efforts to recruit underrepresented minority students to the Grainger College of Engineering.
- Work with Grainger Engineering recruitment staff to form partnerships with high schools and community organizations across the state of Illinois to provide updates regarding MEP and Grainger summer programs.
- Work with Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) and Grainger recruitment staff to promote MEP to participants of summer camps, visitations, and outreach initiatives.
- Represent the Grainger College of Engineering as assigned at relevant pre-college events with a primary focus on underrepresented minority groups.
MEP Student Professional Development
- Coordinate with the Grainger Engineering Scholarship Coordinator, Engineering Career Services (ECS), International Programs in Engineering (IPENG), and Office of Undergraduate Research to proactively promote scholarship, internship, and research opportunities to MEP students.
- Communicate with corporate partners, alumni, and graduate schools in identifying and referring MEP students for internships, plant tours, and professional conferences.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree
- Two (2) years of work experience with academic and/or professional development programs for students
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years of professional work experience in higher education in college student advising, academic retention programs, recruitment, or pre-college programs.
- Demonstrated success in coordinating mentoring and academic support programs for underrepresented and underserved minority students.
- Professional experience in implementing inclusive student programming that builds community and promotes a sense of belonging for students.
- Experience with newsletter and social media communications strategies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Ability to work flexible and extended hours, including some weekends.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The minimum salary is $55,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work primarily on-site. Work authorization is not available for this position.
