Job description

Job Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of patients recovering from surgery, monitoring vital signs, consciousness levels, and overall physiological stability.
- Airway Management: Ensure the patent airway of patients and assist with interventions as needed, such as administering oxygen and suctioning.
- Monitoring: Continuously monitor patients for signs of post-anesthesia complications, including respiratory distress, cardiovascular instability, and pain.
- Pain Management: Administer prescribed medications for pain relief and assess the effectiveness of pain management strategies.
- Recovery Protocols: Follow established recovery protocols and guidelines to ensure a smooth transition from the operating room to the PACU.
- Communication: Communicate effectively with the surgical team, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide updates on patient status and collaborate on patient care.
- Patient Education: Provide post-operative education to patients and their families, including instructions on postoperative care, pain management, and potential complications.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to coordinate the patient's transition from the PACU to the next level of care, such as a hospital room or outpatient recovery.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the medical records.
- Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, including situations such as respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, or other post-anesthesia complications.
- Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives, including reviewing and analyzing patient outcomes, and contributing to the development of best practices.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program. Some employers may prefer or require a BSN.
- Licensure: Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Certification: Some employers may prefer or require certification in PeriAnesthesia Nursing (CPAN) or Post Anesthesia Nursing (PACU).
- Clinical Experience: Previous experience in a surgical or perioperative setting is often preferred. Critical care experience is valuable due to the acute nature of post-anesthesia care.
- Critical Thinking Skills: Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, especially in high-pressure situations.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Adaptability: Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic environment, as patient conditions can change rapidly.
