The Position 

With the launch of our strategic plan, Floreat 2030, one of our key priorities is to enhance STEAM learning at SMUS.  To that end, the Senior School seeks a Head of Engineering, Technology and Design.  This person will be a dynamic and engaging instructional leader with a passion for experiential, hands-on learning. They design learning experiences that challenge students, and they actively seek to learn about and incorporate new technology.

This is a full-time teaching position with the leadership of our Engineering, Technology and Design associated with the role.  This leadership aspect of all Heads of Department are on five year terms, with the option of re-applying for the role. In addition to the salary, there is an annual stipend of $3,000 for the Head of Department role.

Responsibilities include:

In addition to the responsibilities of a teacher, the responsibilities of a Head of Engineering, Technology and Design include:

• Teach Engineering, Technology and/or Design (ETD) -related courses at the Senior School level.  This could include Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, and Media Design and will depend on the specific areas of strength of the successful candidate.
• Work alongside the Director of Educational Technology to implement curriculum related to the School’s strategic priority of enhancing STEAM programming.
• Leading departmental meetings and facilitating professional learning of ETD teachers.
• Leading curriculum and assessment planning sessions with teaching teams.
• Creating regular opportunities for teachers to share, reflect and improve on instructional practice and student learning experience.
• Help develop and support extracurricular opportunities related to the Engineering, Technology and Design department.
• Provide instructional support and design of units and lessons, including providing content knowledge in fields related to Engineering, Technology and Design and the Ministry of Education’s Applied, Design, Skills and Technology curriculum.
• Design innovative learning experiences in STEAM-based opportunities to support the classroom experience.
• Create and model learning environments that foster a culture of innovation, creativity, and real-world problem-solving, teaching, and learning.
• Support the development of the STEAM action plan and key deliverables. 
• Collaborating with other school academic leaders in curriculum, assessment, and contributing to developing academic policies and practices across the school.
• Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills with faculty and students. 
• Foster a creative, entrepreneurial, and inspiring spirit in learning. 
• Contributing to the extracurricular (and boarding life) of the school.
• Liaising with other academic leaders, teaching faculty, parents and school leadership.

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, preferably with a specialization in Technology, Sciences, Engineering, or Computer Science.
• Equivalent industry experience may be considered.
• Eligible for, or holder of a current BC teaching certificate.
• Experience teaching high school math, science and/or B.C.’s ADST curriculum will be an asset.
• Leadership experience facilitating and leading teams, strategic planning, project management, staff training and presentations. 
• Demonstrated ability to lead and coach faculty and student groups in design-thinking planning and learning related to key academic priorities, including sustainability, design and applied sciences. 
• Passion for all areas of teaching in the field of Engineering, Technology and Design.
• Belief and practice in collaborative curriculum planning to design inspiring learning opportunities for students.
• An ability to keep up to date in the subject area, teaching pedagogies and resources.
• Strength in leadership and organizational skills.
• A classroom environment that enables individual learners to thrive within a differentiated and highly motivating learning environment. 
• Strong communication skills.
• Experience with cross curricular planning and assessment.
• Experience using Google Classroom and other technology to support learning.
• An understanding of current differentiation strategies and commitment to the needs of all learners. 
• Growth mindset and ability to offer and receive professional feedback.
• Evidence of innovative and inspiring teaching practices and assessment.
• Evidence and commitment to a collaborative approach with a team of talented educators.
• Experience working in an environment of excellence where a broad spectrum of programs operate simultaneously, demanding a great deal of forward planning and creativity. 
• Commitment to pastoral care and to delivering high quality education through a holistic lens.

Salary:

Annual salary Range: $68,785 - $111,327.

Criminal Record Check: 

Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
