Department Summary

The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism is an ACEJMC-accredited school with the only professionally accredited journalism master’s program in the four-state region of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arkansas. The school is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, in one of the largest media markets in the country. We offer journalism classes in public relations, advertising, print/digital, broadcast/digital, and photojournalism. The Mayborn enrolls approximately 1,000 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students. Graduates have won many national and international awards, including Pulitzer Prizes. The school offers students multi-platform professional opportunities including the award-winning North Texas Daily student newspaper, Denton Public Access TV, and student-run photography and ad/PR agencies. The school also hosts the annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference, the nationally acclaimed conference for aspiring and experienced writers, journalists and authors.



Position Overview

This entry-level position is responsible for coordinating various aspects of student support and outreach. This includes a variety of administrative duties such as support of student organizations, the MSOJ scholarship process, recruiting, retention and job placement efforts, all Mayborn events, and assists faculty with student programs. This position coordinates tutoring with graduate students and tutors Mayborn undergraduates as needed.

Job Duties

o

Organize, execute and monitor high school outreach, which includes creating a communication plan for each semester, maintaining a contact information database of relevant high school teachers in Texas, processing data from admit reports to find top FTIC feeder schools to prioritize, keeping records of events, monitoring high school journalism awards/competitions and reaching out to their schools to offer congratulations if they have any winners. Assist in developing recruitment/yield plans and communication using data and coordinating those plans with Mayborn Advising, the marketing director, as well as others involved in recruiting. Attend recruitment events as needed.



o

Organize and support the Mayborn scholarship process from applications to distributions. Notify students of approaching deadlines, update scholarship information and amounts, verify student eligibility, communicate and organize the scholarship committee for review of applications and decision making, provide administrative work necessary for distribution. Attend and organize the annual Celebrate Mayborn Student Scholarship Gala with MSOJ staff.



o

Maintain database of contact information from weekly student admit reports and orientation rosters. Organize and execute prospective student communication, including processing weekly reports and maintaining database info, handwriting post cards to send out to interested students, emailing detailed information about specific area of interest, and sending timely information to relevant parties (e.g. all juniors/seniors get information about Scripps Howard applications, etc.) based on the student’s progress in applying/enrolling to UNT. Email and mail communication weekly.



o

Provide administrative support and serve as point-of-contract for student organizations (including KTA), media and agencies. This includes ePars, purchasing, monitoring budgets, deposits and payments.



o

Monitor the [email protected] email account. Attend Mayborn events to offer general support. Serve as point-of-contact for We Care, We Count. Work with businesses/non-profits to facilitate internship postings on Handshake.



o

Provide administrative support to the Mayborn Scripps Howard program (or its successor), which includes purchasing necessary equipment and checking budget, maintaining meeting notes, creating and maintaining records for applicants and cohort, coordinating student stay on campus, and providing general administrative support as needs arise.



o

Support the Mayborn Career Coach by helping with events, mentor initiatives as well as provide administrative support if necessary. Represent Mayborn in Career Center meetings. Provide administrative support to Living Learning Community and liaise with housing.



o

Coordinate tutoring with graduate student mentors. Tutors Mayborn undergraduates as needed.
