Job description
The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant I with excellent attention to detail and organizational skills to join Dr. Keri Drake’s laboratory. Dr. Drake’s research involves studying the genetic and molecular regulation of kidney development.
· General laboratory responsibilities
o Maintaining, organizing, and performing experiments
o Ordering and inventory of supplies
o Record keeping
· Basic skills in molecular and developmental biology techniques
· Basic laboratory techniques
o Genotyping (PCR, gel electrophoresis)
o Mouse dissections and euthanasia/tissue preparation
o Mouse breeding and working with genetic models
While previous relevant laboratory experience is preferred, candidates are NOT required to be able to perform any specific techniques independently and will receive training for all techniques performed in the lab. Candidates who are highly motivated to be trained and/or learn new techniques with the goal to work mostly independently but with general oversight/supervision from the Principal Investigator are preferred. There will be ample opportunities for growth, including performing more advanced techniques such as in-situ hybridization, immunoassays, confocal microscopy, cell culture, and global transcriptomic profiling assays.
A minimum two-year commitment to the position is preferred, with the option for advancement in the lab.
· Master’s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required.
· Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and one (1) year research experience at level of Research Technician or equivalent.
· Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and four (4) years research experience including two (2) years at level of Research Technician or equivalent.
· High school graduation or GED and six (6) years research experience to include two (2) years at level of Research Technician or equivalent.
· Performs more difficult scientific and medical research work in science areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
· Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus.
· Records and evaluates data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers.
· Collaborates with supervisor or other research personnel in preparation of scientific papers for publication.
· Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning procedures and implementation.
· Collects and organizes research data for project reports.
· May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of Research Technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
