PRIMARY FUNCTION Conduct field research trials, establish and carry out agronomic management of field research trials in the soybean breeding program and variety testing programs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Field research trial operations - Coordinate field research trial management including weed and pest management, and irrigation.
- Coordinate field site selection, layouts, planting and harvesting research trials and seed increases.
- Calibrate and operate specialized research equipment including tractors, planters, combines and threshers.
- Utilize specialized software and GPS to achieve precise planting and trial management.
- Haul farm equipment to off-site trial locations to plant, manage, and harvest trials at multiple locations across the state of Illinois.
- Utilize data management software to document and plan work activities, timelines, and schedules.
- Coordinate with faculty, staff and students, as needed to carry out trials.
General breeding program operations - Conduct soybean population advancement and cross-pollination in the field and greenhouse.
- Process and manage seed; including packaging, inventory, storage and disposal.
- Evaluate data and take notes on the different research plots
- Train and supervise hourly workers. This will include assigning tasks and overseeing hourly workers, including undergraduate and students and interns employees.
Research equipment optimization - Maximize the data quality and output from mechanized operations.
- Care for and monitor specialized field research equipment and coordinate with specialized mechanics to maintain all equipment in excellent working condition.
- Coordinate and ensure the routine maintenance of trucks and trailers.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS B.S. in agronomy, crop science, or a related field
At least 2 years of experience working in an agricultural research program.
Prior experience operating and maintaining field research equipment including planters, combines and tractors.
Experience hauling equipment.
Possess a driver's license when starting this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
Knowledge of common field research trial layouts.
Ability to quickly learn how to use specialized research farm equipment.
Willingness and enthusiasm for travel within the state to conduct or oversee field data collection and coordination of activities and data management with on-site staff.
APPOINTMENT STATUS
This is a 12-month, 100%-time academic professional position. The minimum salary for this entry level position is $50,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.
