Job description

The hours are Monday through Thursday 6:30am to 5:00pm with some exceptions for City events or helping with snow clearing. GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in support of the maintenance and repair of municipal buildings, facilities, and grounds.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direction of the Director of Operations but may receive oversight from higher level Facilities Technicians.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs and assists in semi-skilled building maintenance tasks involving remodeling, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, roofing and variety of other craft work.
- With some oversight, performs framing, rough and finish carpentry.
- Hangs, repairs, and replaces doors and associated mechanisms.
- Under supervision, repairs interior cabinetry such as counters, cupboards and shelves.
- Installs, repairs and maintains a variety of plumbing fixtures including, sinks, toilets, faucets, and related equipment.
- Performs routine electrical work; installs, repairs and replaces light fixtures, ballasts and fluorescent lighting; replacing wires, breakers, plugs, switches, fixtures as needed.
- Maintains and repairs basic issues with the heating and air conditioning equipment, HVAC.
- Performs drywall installation and repairs; finishes joints with proper compounds and tape; sands surfaces in preparation for texturing and painting.
- Participates in the installation and repair of roofs; troubleshoots leaks and minor roof damage.
- Prepares forms, sets rebar, pours and finishes concrete to repair or construct building slabs, foundations, retaining walls, patios and related structures.
- Provides snow and ice removal from walkways, stairs, entrances and exits of municipal buildings and facilities.
- Completes work orders and tracking of records.
- Performs work in a safe manner and within policy and procedures. Reports unsafe activity and conditions.
- Responds to facility safety issues; performs repairs as necessary to ensure compliance.
- Provides and upkeeps records of work performed and repairs made in appropriate programs.
- May drive and operate light equipment and vehicles.
- Responds to emergencies, outages, and system failures as required, including on a rotational standby basis.
- Other duties and responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- One year related experience in maintenance or repairs.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that qualify the individual to have the skills to complete with the required job duties.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Must be at least 18yrs old.
- Requires a valid Utah Driver's License.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, physical and driving record check
- Required to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL Class A with tanker and air endorsements) within 4 months from date of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English.
- Basic knowledge of principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in carpentry, drywall, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, concrete, roofing and a variety of other building trades.
- Ability to perform skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of municipal buildings, facilities and grounds.
- Maintain a high volume of work output with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor in all types of conditions and weather.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED
- Operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools used in the course of building construction, woodworking, and building maintenance.
- May drive and operate light equipment and vehicles.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Initiative and independent judgment are sometimes required in the troubleshooting and repair work.
- Work is physically strenuous, and the employee must be physically fit for bending, stooping, stretching, lifting, and carrying heavy equipment and materials up to 90 lbs.
- Some work is done in or near traffic having inattentive drivers.
- Hazardous conditions also involve working on electrical fixtures and motors.
- Employees are subject to standby and 24-hour call out for emergencies.
- Great mental effort is required daily; moderate mental pressure and fatigue exist during a normal workday; tasks require a variety of physical activities, such as walking, lifting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing.
- Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity exist.
- Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and some guided problem solving.
- Employee is regularly required to operate a motor vehicle and other equipment..
