Visual Designer Location Charlottesville, VA :

The University of Virginia seeks applications for a Visual Designer to join The Karsh Institute of Democracy. The Visual Designer will lead and implement creative design strategy and services to support Karsh Institute strategic marketing and communications projects. This new position will report to the Director of Communications and will collaborate closely with the Associate Director of Content and Marketing on initiatives that build the Institute's emerging brand and reputation. The Visual Designer will produce creative designs for integrated, multi-platform use across the Karsh Institute's digital and print media as well as visuals that effectively communicate strategic intent. The Visual Designer will serve as the creative lead for projects across the Institute, including its labs and partner initiatives, establishing a look and feel across digital and print channels in alignment with the University's visual identity ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Develops creative for a range of Karsh Institute mediums including web, social media, video, email marketing, PowerPoint, and print using photography, iconography, illustration, colors, and type treatment.
• Serves as the Institute's creative lead and provides guidance on creative direction for projects.
• Develops and oversees creative project intake and systems to track project components, production timelines, and vendor relations and ensures adherence to schedules, project specifications, and budget limitations.
• Meets with internal clients to identify graphic needs, establish roles and timelines for graphic design projects, and design and produce creative content for clients.
• Employs the University's graphics standards, techniques, methods, and style guides, and develops graphic templates and toolkits for the Institute.
• Stays up to date on industry trends and emerging technologies.
• Manages relations with external design and print vendors.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required, visual design, digital arts or related fields are preferred.
• Minimum 3 years of design experience, including branding, visual identity, web and digital design, and print design.
• Proficiency with Apple OS, Adobe Creative Suite including After-Effects and Sketch.
• Portfolio that demonstrates a range of design deliverables across media.
• Demonstrates expertise in design fundamentals, the ability to think creatively and provide marketable solutions when conceiving, developing, and producing deliverables.
• Demonstrates a high level of creativity in generating original design concepts within an established visual identity system.
• Experience with online collaboration tools for project management.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences and value diverse experiences, styles, backgrounds, and perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of digital and print design principles, including accessible design principles and application.
• Superb verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
• Knowledge of HTML, CSS and Drupal and related tools.
• Knowledge of web and digital strategies and standards to improve communications, usability and user experience, and accessibility.
• Knowledge of print production processes and best practices.
• Motion and animation experience.
• Photography and/or videography experience.
• Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. and will have the ability to work in a hybrid capacity.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,000-$70,000 commensurate with education and experience. This is an Exempt level, benefited position.
