Responsibilities:
First responder to donor referrals from area hospitals; team huddle with unit staff; offer the option of donation to families where there is no donor directive; obtain a past medical history. Must articulate information in an easily understood manner to families whose ability to process information is impaired by emotionally traumatic circumstances, doing so in a discrete and sensitive manner. When not on call, will provide assistance to the hospital development team and support others within the department. Position typically requires a minimum of 10, 24-7 referral response days per month.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology or related allied health degree preferred with previous experience in an acute health care setting, hospice, bereavement counseling center, patient representative, etc. preferred, or equivalent work experience where there was active involvement in issues involving death, dying, grief and loss. Completion of medical terminology course preferred. Outstanding interpersonal communication skills required for ability to interact with grieving families in a supportive, empathic manner while taking into consideration actual or potential cultural diversities. Ability to comfortably use desktop computer to access and utilize database, draft letters, send/receive email, and access the Internet for vital information/resources to assist donor families.
