Job Title: Executive Director, United Faculty of Florida (UFF)
Classification: Management
Supervisor: FEA Director of Organizing and Field Services
Location: Office in Tallahassee, Florida (extensive statewide travel required)

The United Faculty of Florida is searching for a dynamic and forward-thinking Executive Director with experience building union power to position our union as the trusted voice for higher education workers and higher education policies. This work is to be accomplished in a political environment of relentless attacks on our institutions and values.

UFF is a higher education affiliate of the Florida Education Association (FEA), representing more than 20,000 faculty members and 8,000 graduate assistants in universities and colleges. We have over thirty chapters from Key West to the Panhandle. FEA is the largest union of professional employees and the largest labor union in the Southeast, representing more than 120,000 higher education and K-12 educators. FEA and UFF are affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.

Position Summary: The Executive Director serves as the union’s Chief of Staff. Primary responsibilities include working with UFF’s Officers, Steering Committee, Senate, and chapter leaders statewide to build and empower chapters and their members, to enhance our effectiveness at our workplaces and the state capitol, and to advance our union as the trusted voice of higher education workers and the ideals of academic freedom and free inquiry. The Executive Director directs and supervises staff, addressing the operational needs of our union, including budgetary and financial matters.

The candidate must possess the demonstrated ability to effectively navigate politically sensitive situations, successfully manage multiple high-priority projects, productively lead a dynamic team, and continuously build and maintain a thriving higher education union. Experience doing this in situations where workers and union structures are widely geographically distributed is a plus.

The Executive Director and other UFF staff are employees of the FEA.

Responsibilities:
Direct and work with staff and chapter leaders to:

  1. Build strong union chapters through robust organizing programs--within both existing and potential new bargaining units.
  2. Support chapter leadership in all union activities, including collective bargaining, contract enforcement, member representation, legislative and political action, and community outreach.
  3. Perform administrative duties to ensure the smooth operations of UFF, including working with budgets and the local union’s finances.
  4. Build a strong higher education policy, legislative and political action program.
  5. Develop and disseminate effective external and internal communications.
  6. Overall, support programs and activities as directed by the UFF elected leadership.
  7. Perform other duties and inter-departmental activities as assigned by the FEA Chief of Staff, or the FEA Director of Organizing and Field Services.
  8. Uniformly and consistently manage, implement, and enforce FEA’s programs, policies and the FEA/FSO Collective Bargaining Agreement, as well as supervise all contract and temporary employees.
  9. Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Experience with and knowledge of the specific challenges facing organizers and representatives of public sector workers in difficult environments.
  2. Experience with and knowledge of higher education as a sector.
  3. Independent project management skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to lead and work inclusively with a diverse staff and membership.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills and diplomatic approach to managing relationships with a wide array of stakeholders.
  6. Ability to listen actively, frame issues and facilitate meetings.
  7. Knowledge and experience with organizing strategies, collective bargaining, and contract enforcement.
  8. Ability to develop and implement budgets.
  9. A four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
  10. A strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  11. Willingness to work evenings and weekends, and to travel widely within the state.

Coordination with FEA:
In addition to working with UFF elected leadership, the Executive Director supports the work of the local union’s state federation, FEA. The Executive Director will ensure that UFF policies and operations are consistent with the vision and mission of FEA and will report to FEA’s Chief of Staff and Director of Organizing and Field Services when appropriate. The Executive Director will work with FEA legislative, legal, communications and other staff when needed. The Executive Director will follow the provisions of the FEA/FSO staff contract.

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary will be based on relevant experience and qualifications. FEA provides medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance to its employees and eligible family members with no monthly employee premiums. Additionally, FEA provides retirement options, vacation leave, sick leave, and paid holidays.

How to Apply:
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and résumé via email to: [email protected]. Candidates should apply no later than March 21st, 2024. The posting will remain open until the position is filled.
