Assistant Manager, Merrill Family Sailing Center

Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

The Assistant Manager of The Merrill Family Sailing Center supports the management of all aspects of the Sailing Centers operations including business and programming operations, budget development, facility maintenance, and the management of the day-to-day operations of the center. Through collaboration with university and community partners, the Assistant Manager facilitates staff scheduling for Physical Education classes at the sailing center, community sailing classes, and summer programming, which are critical revenue generating activities of the center. This role is essential to the smooth and safe daily operations of this facility.

This position is a full-time, 10-month position typically working February 15th through December 15th.

Required Qualifications:

• Trade/Vocational/Technical School and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of both.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (primarily Word and Excel).
• Ability to perform boat safety inspections, docks repairs, and both motorized and non-motorized boat repairs (including large and small sailboats).
• Demonstrated success in instructing others to repair and preventative maintenance of boats and docks.
• Ability to obtain a NYS Boating Safety Certification prior to the start date.
• American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification.
• Valid driver's license and the ability to tow a trailer.
• Ability to teach a variety of sailing classes to students of varying ability.
• US Sailing level 1 coaching certification, or the ability to become certified within a year.
• US Sailing Basic Keelboat instructor certification, or the ability to become certified within a year.
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion , and wellbeing.
• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
• Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications:

• US Sailing performance keelboat instructor certification.
• US Sailing Level Two coaching certification.
• SafeSport training certification.
• Experience with small engine repair and maintenance, rigging and sail repair, and fiberglass and gelcoat repair.
• Prior experience working in a rental or charter facility or as a waterfront facility manager.
• Prior experience sailboat racing.
