Salary: $93,000 for Associate Professor; $102,000 for Full Professor
*If hired as Department Chair, salary is increased 15% plus a stipend for a 12-month position.

Position:

The Department of Central American and Transborder Studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Central American and Transborder Studies at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor for an academic year position. If qualified, the new hire could be appointed to the role of department chair at the time of hire or in the future. The Department Chair role is a 12-month position.

The successful candidate will teach in Central American and Transborder Studies (CATS) and have research interests in issues that engage Central American communities in the Central American region and the Diaspora. The candidate's research will center Central American cultures and transborder epistemologies that emphasize human rights, justice, labor, migration, youth, family separation, and organizing through critical race, people's movement, environmental healing, and/or transnationalism analyses. The candidate must have a commitment to work and collaborate with the Central American community in Los Angeles and the southern California region.

The associate/full professor position requires weekly office hours, , participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

If hired as chair, the new hire will lead the department to further its excellence in teaching and research through innovation and collaboration; strategic planning with departmental, college, university, local, national, and international communities; overseeing budgets; personnel and facility management; faculty development; student recruitment and retention; curriculum development; and other required duties such as planning and facilitation of faculty meetings. The Chair will report to the Dean and will work collaboratively with other departments in the College of Humanities. The initial appointment as chair is for a three-year term and is renewable for an additional three-year term.

Faculty Responsibilities:


Faculty success at CSUN is measured by three criteria: teaching effectiveness; contributions to one's field of study; and service to the University and Community. The standard teaching assignment is 12 units (4 courses per semester). However, new probationary (untenured) faculty members in their first two years teach 9 units per semester (3 courses). Successful candidates should be able to teach courses offered by the Department. Faculty members are encouraged to develop new courses as needed by the Department.


Peer-reviewed publications are important for tenure and promotion, and CSUN faculty members can apply for competitive awards that provide course releases for research or fund travel for research. Presentations at academic conferences are supported with annual travel funds. Tenure-line faculty members participate in shared governance, usually in Department, College, and University committees and other service assignments.
