Staff Organizer
Based in New Orleans, LA
Job Description:
United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO, Local 527, AFT, AFL-CIO) is seeking a full-time Staff Organizer with employment beginning in March 2024. This is an in-person role in New Orleans, LA, with the expectation of in-office or field work most days each week. The Staff Organizer works to build labor power in New Orleans Higher Education Institutions.
Duties and responsibilities include:
- Organize and mobilize workers;
- One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members;
- Identify, recruit, and develop rank-and-file member leaders;
- Hold and facilitate committee meetings;
- Maintain day-to-day operations of a campaign, including (but not limited to): maintaining accurate lists, using databases, etc.
- Plan and execute actions;
- Attend regular meetings with team to discuss progress and feedback on performance;
- Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required.
Desired qualifications, traits and abilities:
- At least two (2) years experience as an organizer; preferred applicants will have at least two (2) years paid experience as an organizer in the labor movement;
- Experience developing organic leaders;
- Willingness and flexibility to make quick changes to strategy and pivot when necessary;
- Ability to self-direct—independently develop and prioritize goals, tasks, and timelines, and take initiative in projects;
- Ability and willingness to occasionally work irregular hours (i.e. evenings and weekends);
- Approachable with strong communication skills;
- Dedication to social and economic justice and a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population;
- Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license;
- Must be competent in basic computer/web functions including the Google Suite, Sheets and/or Excel;
- Must be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented;
- Must be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the campaign lead and campaign director.
Compensation:
UTNO staff are unionized. Per the contract between UTNO Local 527 and the UTNO Staff Union, the Staff Organizer salary is $59,000 (not including benefits). Benefits include fully employer-paid health insurance, generous leave time, cell phone stipend and a retirement match.
