Job description

Job Description:

We’re looking for a full-time team member who knows a bit about wine, is thirsty to learn more (see what we did there?), believes cleaning bathrooms is as at least as important as expounding on the difference between Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet, knows how to be a great team member, and cares passionately about sending customers home with bottles that make them think, “Wow – I’m so glad I went to Chain Bridge Cellars.” The ability to comprehend really long sentences is probably important too.

The job is first and foremost “retail” including all the messy bits: stocking, wrestling cases of wine, shipping, computer inventory work, using email and phones to confirm orders, printing and posting tags, pulling and processing online orders and all the other grunt work it takes to keep a wine shop going. This will likely take up more than 50% of your time. You’ll also be greeting customers, running a cash register and carrying orders out to customers’ cars.

The more obviously fun part is helping customers find that perfect bottle (or 4), tasting lots of wine, helping make buying decisions, assisting with (maybe even leading) tastings and classes, doing social media stuff, writing targeted sales/marketing emails, and gratuitously making fun of both mass-produced factory and “natural” wine. And a little bit of wine travel when we can make it happen.

You’ll usually work until 7 or 8pm and sometimes need to stay later. You’ll work 40+ Saturdays each year, most Sundays, and (at least for a while) will be last in line for extra time off from October-December. We’ll flex with your requests as we can, but retail works schedules can be a drag.

If you’re interested, we need you to show us you’re flexible enough to thrive in a pretty fluid daily workplace, communicate easily with supervisors and peers, have solid computer skills, come across as friendly and welcoming to strangers and colleagues and are ready to work hard to learn how we do things and all you need to know about wine. If you already know a lot about wine, that’s cool, too. But working in a shop like this plus putting in time on your own will bring you wine knowledge faster than you can imagine.

This is a full-time, salaried, position that starts in the $55-$60k range depending on experience plus an annual bonus depending on business results (usually 3-10% but great years can push that nicely). Also included: two weeks paid vacation year 1 (three weeks after that), paid holidays, health benefits (we pay 50%), and a pretty compelling employee discount.

Unfortunately, we are not Metro/public transport accessible, and you must have a valid driver’s license, personal transportation to/from work, and be able to drive our delivery van (it’s a minivan – you’ll be fine). You must be able to stand for extended periods of time, walk, bend, reach, and lift, use a hand truck, lift and carry 50 pounds up and down stairs multiple times per day. We’re not big on certifications, but mention them if you’ve got ‘em. You must have experience working in a retail, restaurant or hospitality setting, ideally for two-plus years. No exceptions on that one.

We’re hoping all of this gives you a good idea about whether or not this is an exciting opportunity for you. If you think it is, please send us your resume and cover letter. Your cover letter is an extremely important part of your submission – we have to sell by email, so your ability to sell us on you in your cover letter is part of the application. Please, no phone calls and no recruiters. We look forward to hearing from you!
