General Statement of Duties Performs responsible unskilled housekeeping and custodial work in the care and cleaning of the school system buildings.
Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class performs general housekeeping in the school system's buildings. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, supplemented by instructions under regular supervision. Tasks require continuing physical effort. Duties may also include assisting in maintaining building security, or operating heavy floor cleaning equipment. Work is reviewed and supervised by the Lead Custodian through observation and feedback and also by the Principal, Assistant Principal, or other Administrator. Work is inspected and given technical assistance by the Custodial Section of the Maintenance Operations Department.
Illustrative Examples of Work - Cleans floors, walls, windows, blinds, lavatories, fixtures and bathrooms.
- Washes windows and rugs; changes light bulbs and fixtures.
- Sweeps, mops, and dusts assigned areas.
- Moves and arranges furniture, empties trash containers, cleans ash trays, and straightens up public areas.
- Scrubs and cleans toilets including mirrors, wash basins, commodes, etc.; fills and stocks tissue, towel and soap dispensers.
- Polishes and waxes floors; operates buffers.
- Removes trash from grounds and parking lots around the maintained building.
- Uses tools and equipment such as vacuum cleaners, brooms, mops, hammers, screw drivers; performs maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Performs floor care to include but not limited to buffing, stripping, waxing/polishing.
- Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
- General knowledge of routine maintenance requirements of buildings, grounds, and equipment used.
- Ability to identify cleaning needs and address with appropriate methods and supplies.
- Ability to perform manual labor requiring continuous physical effort.
- Must be able to lift/carry a minimum of 25 pounds frequently.
- Must be able to lift overhead.
- Must be able to walk/stand up to 8 hours per day
- Must be able to squat, crouch, creep, crawl, climb, bend, stoop frequently throughout a shift.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor, school officials, other employees, and the general public.
Desirable Education and Experience Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
