ZymoChem is breakthrough science for a fossil-free future.  We accelerate the transition to a real-zero economy by developing bio-based materials for everyday products.  Our platform is powered by proprietary carbon conserving (C2) microbes that convert renewable feedstocks into high-value materials while radically minimizing CO2 loss during the production phase.

Position Summary

We're seeking an experienced Director of Analytics to lead ZymoChem’s Analytical R&D team for the manufacturing of high-performance products. The primary responsibility of this position will be to lead the Analytical team focused on providing quantitative and qualitative analysis of both small molecules and biopolymers through the development & routine implementation of comprehensive analytical workflows involving LC and MS methods. The role will be to manage and coordinate the team in the efforts to provide analytical support to its cross-functional partners, including Strain Engineering, Enzyme Development Fermentation, Downstream Bioprocessing, and other relevant departments. 

 

Responsibilities

• Manage and oversee the analytics team and it efforts to develop, implement, and validate state-of-the-art LC-UV/RID and LC-MS/MS-based quantitative and qualitative analysis of targeted and untargeted small molecules & polymers in biological matrices
• Lead the design, build-out, and development of new workflows and methods to expand the company’s existing capabilities and accelerate the R&D for achieving the corporate milestones
• Provide technical and non-technical guidance to the analytics team members and assist with training, onboarding, and hiring processes
• Lead data analysis, and you will be responsible for all aspects of additional analytical instrumentation available within the group
• Oversee all technical documentation prepared by the team and its revision processes. 
• Routinely collaborate internally with other R&D groups to establish appropriate analytical methods and deliver high-quality data & analyses toward strain 
• Supports scientists or engineers for projects/publications/ patents.
• Work in accordance with health and safety guidelines and company policies.  
• Contribute to a broad range of technical objectives, such as troubleshooting urgent issues, proactive monitoring and analysis of ongoing manufacturing/testing, early-stage product development strategy, and longer-term development efforts
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications 

• MS or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, with an extensive focus on analytical chemistry
• A minimum of 10 years of industry analytical experience, including at least 3 years managing scientists and research associates
• Experience working in a fast-paced startup environment is preferred
• Expertise in LC-UV/RID and/or LC-MS/MS method development, analysis, validation, and related systems and software applications
• Proven leadership experience with concise communication
• Strong time management skills, effective with multitasking, and an adept ability to improvise work plans while maintaining efficiency
• Ability to lead analytical projects for pilot scale-up and manufacturing processes
• Proficiency with HPLC, GC, and MS systems & software is a requirement; familiarity with other analytical equipment, software, and data analysis tools (e.g., SQL, JMP) is a plus.
• Demonstrated expertise in developing and optimizing analytics workflows, metabolite sample preparation protocols, and data analysis
• Prior experience with metabolomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolic flux analysis workflows and data analyses is a plus

Located in the vibrant East Bay area of San Francisco, our headquarters are housed at Gate 510, a state-of-the-facility with many in-house and nearby amenities. This role is a hybrid position with access to a co-working, collaborative space in Burlington, VT, and the headquarters offices.  

 

Full-time opportunities at ZymoChem come with: 

• Competitive salary range of $170,000 to $220,000 depending on experience.
