JOB SUMMARY :

Under general supervision, club sport coaches recruit student athletes; assist in the scheduling of games, conducts practices for the assigned team, and contributes to the educational mission of the University by offering direction and instruction in the area of club sports.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

% of Time

50% Instruct, teach and assist in the development of players during practices; follow and conform to league rules and regulations.

20% Actively coach team during games/scrimmages

15% Recruit players for the following year and tracts make scholarship recommendations.

10% Transports and supervise players when traveling.

5% Provide accurate data to Director of Club Sports about the team and its members.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  1. Knowledge of recruiting techniques and the ability to effectively use them.
  2. Ability to evaluate potential student athletes during the recruiting process.
  3. Knowledge of league rules and regulations.
  4. Knowledge of coaching and teaching techniques and the ability to effectively use them;
  5. Ability to read and comprehend various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.
  6. Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
  7. Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone.
  8. Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to be able to verify accuracy of record keeping and athletics information.
  9. Ability to handle routine office operations (typing, filing, record keeping, etc.)
  10. Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.
  11. Ability to travel when necessary.
  12. Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

  1. At least one year of experience in coaching at the high school, college or higher competitive level or at least some experience in participating in the respective sport.
  2. Valid driver's license required. License must meet insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
  3. Must take and pass the "American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer."

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS :

The functions of the position usually performed standing, but may require some amount of time sitting. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving instruction in fitness activities involve running, walking and lifting. Tasks involve working on a computer keyboard, typewriter, calculator, cutting, labeling, and taping involve involves extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.
