Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is seeking an Engineering Division Director and Laboratory Chief Engineer to provide organizational and technical leadership for the Division's programs and advocacy for the broader Berkeley Lab engineering community.

The Division Director leads a staff of talented engineers and technical experts across many diverse technical areas. Organized into five Departments, the Division areas of expertise include Mechanical Engineering, Composites, Precision Mechanisms, Robotics and Motion Control, X-ray Optics, Ultra-High Vacuum Systems, Systems Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, Magnetics Systems, Superconducting Magnets, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, High Voltage and Pulsed Power, Large Physics Detectors, ASICs, Semiconductor Detectors, Laser Systems, RF Engineering, Feedback Systems, DAQ and Control Systems, CAD and Document Management Systems, Project Controls, and Project Management – to build world class instrumentation in support of Berkeley Lab’s next big discoveries. As a leader of one of Berkeley Lab’s largest organizations, the Division Director is responsible for engineering, technical and operational support of many of the Laboratory’s large-scale scientific programs and projects through a matrixed organizational structure, including the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the ALS Upgrade project (ALS-U), the 88-inch Cyclotron, the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA), and other programs and projects across the Laboratory, including multi-institutional and international collaborations. Reporting to the Associate Laboratory Director for Physical Sciences, the Division Director has full responsibility for all areas of management within the division, overseeing 450 staff. The Division Director establishes a culture of technical excellence, equity and inclusion by recruiting a diverse population of outstanding engineers, technicians and professional staff, as well as enthusiastically supporting and promoting their career development. The Division Director also serves as a member of the executive team for the Physical Sciences Area (comprising the Physics, Engineering, Nuclear Science, and Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Divisions), as well as a member of Berkeley Lab's management team. Accordingly, the Division Director is expected to build collaborative partnerships and programs across Berkeley Lab and with external research institutions, seek institutional strategies to improve project delivery and participate in oversight and review of major projects, as well as contribute to responsible stewardship of the Lab’s research, people and assets.

This position holds a dual role as the Laboratory’s Chief Engineer, serving as an advocate for the laboratory’s engineering community. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, the Chief Engineer is responsible for providing advice to the Laboratory Director on issues affecting the overall recruiting, development, strength, diversity, and health of the engineering community within the Laboratory. The Chief Engineer also champions Lab-wide engineering processes and acts as spokesperson for the Division in interactions with external agencies, including the Department of Energy (DOE).
