Registered Nurse Manager, Pain Management

Sign-On Bonus $2,500

Overall Responsibility:

Direct supervision of the Pain Management department. Responsible for the selection of the nursing and allied professionals, staffing, orientation, clinical education, competency evaluation, and policies and procedures related to day to day operations. Collaborates with providers and their extenders to maintain good working relationships and ensure needs in conjunction with quality of care, safety and patient satisfaction. Works directly with the CNO to develop and implement operating and capital budgets. Ensures efficient and cost-effective use of human and material resources. Provides leadership for ongoing development and monitoring of the Pain Management department. Provides leadership for the interdisciplinary Pain Management team. Collaborates with other department leaders to maintain good working relationships and synergy.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  1. Acts as liaison between physicians and Pain Management staff.
  2. Ensures that performance procedures are in according to policy and procedure.
  3. Coordinates function of Pain Management, supervision of personnel, evaluations, orientation for new personnel or for present personnel to new techniques.
  4. Coordinates and manages all aspects of department operations for Pain Management.
  5. Maintains effective communication and coordination of activities between departments.
  6. Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory requirements.
  7. Prepares; monitors and adheres to annual hospital and operational budgets.
  8. Accurately identifies and expeditiously resolves issues affecting the delivery of care.
  9. Develops standards of care and performance and implements a mechanism for the ongoing evaluation and improvement of performance standards.
  10. Develops written policies, procedures, and practice protocols pertinent to the Pain Management department.
  11. Evaluates and implements new products relevant to the Pain Management department.
  12. Participates on nursing and hospital committees as requested.
  13. Actively promotes a positive image of hospital with the public and professional community.
  14. Communicates clearly, openly, and honestly in verbal and written formats.
  15. Maintains expertise with computer-based programs, and utilizes reports to improve performance and ensures full utilization of system by staff.
  16. Assesses own performance using insight and constructive feedback to set goals to enrich knowledge and skills required to perform role.
  17. Maintains a positive work environment for staff and providers.
  18. Ensures adequate staffing in order to achieve department's function and purpose. Completes and maintains departmental staffing plan and reports any variances.
  19. Adheres to established departmental operation and salary budgets, and provides explanations of budget variances.
  20. Ensures staff performance evaluations are current and are reviewed by employees during an annual performance interview. Completes initial departmental orientation and competency review for newly hired employees. Ensures that all licensure/credentials certificates for applicable personnel are valid and up to date. Updates and maintains job descriptions for each job classification in accordance with hospital policy and procedures.
  21. Analyzes nursing care provided in the departments related to the established standards of care.
  1. Assigns patient care responsibilities based on patient needs and qualifications of available staff. Utilizes PRN staff of supplemental staffing and minimization of overtime.
  2. Ensures that monitoring of the Environment of Care is performed on a daily basis.
  3. Knowledgeable of proper handling of narcotics, sign-out and return, according to the hospital policies and DEA guidelines.
  4. Follows up/investigates variances in narcotic administration/counting.
  5. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
  6. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.
  7. Encourages staff and self to participate in monthly Quality Improvement data collection.
  8. Communicates patient information to ensure confidentiality and continuity of care.
  9. Documents all patient information according to established standards of care, policies and procedures.
  10. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a manner to ensure a positive and professional environment.

Licensure and Certification: Licensed as an RN in the state of Kansas. ACLS required.

Experience Required: 3-5 years of management experience.
