Digital Advancement Associate

Santa Fe Institute

Location

Santa Fe, NM | United States

Job description

SFI is seeking a Digital Advancement Associate , to support ongoing programs and new experiments using digital tools to connect with donors.

What do you get?

In addition to full-benefits, this paid, two-year position serves as an apprenticeship in the rapidly evolving field of digitally-enabled advancement. This position will provide you with specific skills in [Salesforce, Django, Directus, Adobe Premiere, Adobe InDesign, Vimeo, Rev, Stripe, Square, FormAssembly, Box, iWave].

These are important skills to cultivate; nonprofits play an indispensable role in addressing the challenges facing our communities and our species. It is often easy to identify domains that would benefit from a nonprofit’s intervention. It is much harder to secure philanthropic funding for nonprofits. Whether your longer-term interests involve building or leading a non-profit organization, or working in advancement – it is crucial to understand how fundraising works in the post-pandemic world.

Where would you work?

This is an in-person position, located on SFI’s Miller Campus – a beautiful 36-acre campus on the edge of Santa Fe with miles of private hiking trails.

What would you do in this position?

There are many benefits to working at SFI but you should be prepared for fluctuating levels of intensity with a high standard of productivity. There will be days that require solitary, focused, deep work that require attention to detail and self-discipline to meet deadlines and others that will ask you to thrive in high-energy, collaborative, time-crucial situations. A standard work week at SFI is 37.5 hours, and the expectation is that you would spend that time doing whatever is needed to make SFI’s advancement efforts successful. Events and time-sensitive projects may require some of those working hours to take place on evenings and weekends.

This position is supervised by SFI’s Director of the Applied Complexity Network, who will help you prioritize tasks. Some specific projects you may be assigned include:

Who will you work with?

The Santa Fe Institute (SFI) is a non-profit research institute dedicated to understanding complex systems. SFI was established by an interdisciplinary group of intellectual leaders, including Nobel Laureates Murray Gell-Mann (Physics), Kenneth Arrow (Economics), Phil Anderson (Physics), and Manfred Eigen (Chemistry).

SFI currently leverages a network of about 30 professors and postdoctoral fellows and over 110 fractal faculty and external faculty members from 86 institutions. The Miller Scholars program , helps us blend artists, philosophers, authors of fiction, science fiction, and science biography into this mix. Each year SFI advances science by hosting over a 1000 visitors and 130 workshops, working groups, and seminars in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Rolling Stone Magazine called SFI "a sort of Justice League of renegade geeks, where teams of scientists from disparate fields study the Big Questions," and the Daily Beast said SFI hosts "America's smartest lunch." The late Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Cormac McCarthy shares his thoughts on SFI in a short video here . More recently Kmele Foster of Big Think released a 45-minute documentary that captures the spirit of SFI here .

Dozens of scientists affiliated with the Institute have won the top awards in their fields and serve in key positions of national and international scientific leadership. Rather than being restrictive and competitive, we pride ourselves in being intellectually inclusive: a world hub for big thinkers. To further work on the more applied side of complexity science, the Institute invites leaders from government, industry, and civil society to participate in meetings that transcend the traditional boundaries of academic discourse. You will work directly with the team that fosters these connections through events, digital collaboration, educational resources, and more.

This position reports to the SFI’s Director of the Applied Complexity Network.

What Is Complexity?

Complexity arises in any system in which many agents interact and adapt to one another and their environments. Examples of these complex systems include the nervous system, the Internet, ecosystems, companies, communities, cities, economies, governments, and more. As individual agents interact and adapt within these systems, evolutionary processes and often surprising "emergent" behaviors arise at the macro level. Complexity science attempts to find common mechanisms that lead to complexity in nominally distinct physical, biological, social, and technological systems.

The Santa Fe Institute is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply, as are individuals who have taken unconventional paths in their careers.

SFI is a vaccinated community; to be employed by SFI and on-site you must provide proof of primary vaccination against COVID-19.
