Job description

The Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies (GSS) and the Effron Center for Study of America (EFF) at Princeton University are seeking a Technical & Web Specialist to join each growing academic unit. The Effron Center comprises the Program in American Studies, Program in Asian American Studies, Program in Latino Studies, and fields of study in Indigenous and Native American Studies and American Jewish Studies. This position is part of an active, collaborative environment and reports to the Program Manager in the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies. The person in this position will provide technical and web support for the people and initiatives of GSS and EFF. They will deliver frontline customer support, maintenance for desktop hardware/software, and web services. They will serve as the main support for the primary computing and audio-visual teaching needs of GSS and EFF, as well as have an active role with communications platforms – website, social, AV storytelling tools -- to help create and showcase the ground-breaking scholarship and meaningful conversations. In addition, the role interacts with teh Office of Information Technology and a network of technical staff across campus. With a focus on customer service, the Technical and Web Specialist will manage day-to-day technical and web operations, including planned and unplanned needs, in the classroom, in event spaces, the Gather Space, the Media Lab, and remotely when applicable. This position will administer desktop computing capabilities, such as new faculty onboarding and critical security protocols, for all faculty, visitors, and staff; enhance and maintain websites in collaboration with WDS, when applicable; establish and support social applications tools; develop and leverage new audio and video capabilities; keep abreast of emerging technologies and makes suggestions to further impact and effectiveness within the Center and with the public; take initiative to assure individuals, events, and projects are appropriately equipped, within budget and timeline. Specific duties, detailed below, include computer hardware and software support; technical support in the in-class, Media Lab, Gather Space, and event venues; website, social platform, and AV applications front-end management, content updates, and development initiatives.

Computer Hardware/Software Support & Technical Administration: Purchase and maintain all technology for Effron Center faculty and staff in EFF offices, Seminar Room, Media Lab, Gather Space, and event locations. Remain current and assure critical security protocols are adopted. Maintain knowledge of and adhere to University and department policies for purchasing and set-up, and maintaining inventory of equipment. Maintain familiarity with a variety of technologies including emerging tools, assure compliance with standards, and troubleshoot and resolve issues, as needed. Educate and train on proper computing techniques, including preparing documentation and instruction as needed, as well as emerging technologies for adoption in the classroom. Support and troubleshoot use of AV and other technical tools in classrooms and for events, when onsite, hybrid, or remote. Participate in OIT community by attending OIT University trainings; communicate and implement new systems, protocols; and share knowledge with peers.

 

In-class, Media Lab, Gather Space, and Event Support: Offer training and troubleshooting to faculty and students engaged in EFF courses, events and projects. Develop expertise using in-room equipment and software. Provide new faculty training to newly hired faculty and visiting lecturers, and pre-semester refreshers with faculty as requested. Understand needs and handle technical set up for all course and event visitors. Provide audio, video, social, web, and interactive media production support for multimedia storytelling coursework and projects using the Media Lab.

 

Website Enhancements, Redesigns, Development & Maintenance: Administer front-end web site development enhancements using latest technology, currently Drupal CMS, for the expanding the Effron Center site throughtout the year; evolve development plans enhancements in coordination with Web Development Services, including a branding redesign, improved navigation, areas of studies, and project microsites and more. In coordination with leadership and institute navigational and content solutions for students, faculty, administration, alumni, and the public looking for key information. Update website content as needed. Maintain current site's front end and back-end. Serve as point-person in WDS projects. Project manage from concept to completion redesign, site enhancements and new sites, and other concepts. Gather requirements, obtain input and direction on scope, design, develop, testing, maintain, content security, management and testing. Maintain user lists, updating bi-annually.

 

Social Apps and Emerging Technologies: Build out and maintain social platforms and emerging technologies in coordination with stakeholders. Track and share internally relevant content in Twitter, Instagram, Facebooks, LinkedIn, and others. Support planned department and communications schedules by obtaining and posting content. Assist in communication execution of unplanned posts, when requested by Center administration. Research and share learning of tools to manage communications on these platforms as well as analytics; suggest adopt new tools in the future, when/if applicable.

 

Video / Audio / Images: Offer expertise in systems, applications and equipment to conceive and post audio and video stories or series on the website and social apps. Research, determine best practices, share knowledge, make recommendations to support effective storytelling for faculty, staff and students digitally and in physical spaces. Provide AV technical support in classroom, EFF event spaces, and the EFF Media Lab. Provide user support in the EFF Media Lab. Research and keep up-to-date internal creative assets digital library.
