Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Technology Licensing Compliance Specialist to join the Intellectual Property Office (IPO).

In this role, the Compliance Specialist promotes compliance with the obligations of intellectual property agreements, including intellectual property management plans, interinstitutional agreements, options, and licenses. The Compliance Specialist advises Berkeley Lab employees (e.g., researchers, administrators, leadership) on matters relating to compliance, including strategies for promoting compliance and providing regular updates on the status and progress of compliance.

The Intellectual Property Office manages Berkeley Lab intellectual property and pursues the commercialization of inventions via intellectual property licenses. The Compliance Specialist helps bring Berkeley Lab's science solutions to the world by leading intellectual property license compliance and managing the post-execution agreement lifecycle.

What You Will Do:

• Perform patent license agreement and licensee compliance activities for the Intellectual Property Office, including prospective licensee (and optionee) diligence and vetting, advising commercialization and licensing colleagues on structure of terms from a compliance perspective and analyzing terms of executed patent license agreements to identify both financial and non-financial obligations.
• Maintain obligation database (Sophia), including creating records for obligations in executed patent license agreements, performing reviews to ensure accuracy, and maintaining records for effective metrics / reporting.
• Lead bi-annual reporting obligation compliance season process, including progress and royalty report templates, liaison with licensees, database recording, and milestone tracking.
• Lead submission review with technology commercialization, licensing, and finance colleagues to determine if submissions are acceptable.
• Lead license financial obligation compliance in collaboration with IPO Finance, maintain and run biannual license compliance metrics (both financial and non-financial), and manage license audits process.
• Manage post-execution agreement lifecycle, including processing form amendments, keeping Sophia records up to date and tracking amendments, as well as the license close-out process when a license expires or terminates.
• Manage expiring Commercial Evaluation License and Option agreement process to promote compliance and conversion to License agreements.
• Advise Berkeley Lab employees on matters relating to compliance, including communicating strategies for promoting compliance and providing regular updates on the status and progress of compliance. Represent Berkeley Lab to UC campuses, DOE national laboratories, and industry (e.g., through the UC-wide IP Managers group or other similar committees).
• Lead all activities related to the Intellectual Property Office's compliance efforts.

What is Required:

• An undergraduate degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated interest and ability to learn and understand contract language and intellectual property processes.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Proven success in managing competing priorities.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and customer service skills.
• Strong critical thinking, decision making, troubleshooting and proactive problem-solving and follow-up skills.
• Intermediate knowledge of standard office software packages (e.g., Google suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe).
• Demonstrated capability to learn, manage, and maintain software tools, such as databases and web-based portals, and create and run queries.

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree and 4 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in agreement compliance and understanding contract language.
• Experience with license agreements in a not-for-profit research institution setting.
• Experience with Sophia and/or iEdison Software Applications.

Notes:

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
• This position is expected to pay $77,500 to $90,0000 annually for the Z30.1 job classification, and $94,800 to $98,800 annually for the Z30.2 job classification. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus aligned with the internal peer group. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.

• The position's hybrid work schedule includes a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
