Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia is currently seeking a full-time Endoscopy Tech. Qualifications - High school/GED required.
- CPR certification through the American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute required.
- Nursing Assistant/Support Tech training preferred. Endoscopy Tech training/certification encouraged.
Overview Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and Nurse Manager in the Endoscopy Room. Assists with the coordination of nursing care of the patient and functions as an active team member in the endoscopy room. Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of equipment, instrumentation and supplies. Requires utilization of simple to complex equipment. In order to maintain patient care per protocol, GI technicians are responsible for disinfecting, storing, and preparing instruments for use. Participates in ongoing education (in-services/skills fairs) for competency in scope cleaning and proper use of endoscopic equipment and instruments. Responsible for documentation of high level disinfection, retrieval and handling of specimens, and care of endoscopy scopes. Assumes the role of expert for specialized endoscopy services; anticipates daily equipment and supply needs based on schedule, prepares for cases, supports the Specialty Nurse, and identifies, communicates, and requests needs for procedural care including endoscope repairs.
What you will do - Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of endoscopic equipment, instrumentation and supplies.
- Handles set up and break down for the endoscopy procedure room to include set-up for Colonoscopy, EGD, and flexible sigmoidoscopy. Uses supplies to help perform procedures. Troubleshoots equipment errors. Performs set-up and breakdown for endoscopy travel cases with hospital.
- Actively supports and assists the endoscopy registered nurse and team in the care of the patients. Ensures the field remains sterile. Collects and delivers specimens collected during procedures.
- Performs proper cleaning and decontamination regarding disinfection and antisepsis of scopes using manufacturer's recommendation. Prevents patient infection through proper cleaning, decontamination/disinfection, storage, and antisepsis of endoscopes. Follows all regulatory (OSHA, CDC, DNV) guidelines as well as manufacture guidelines. Assures and adheres to quality control including storage of endoscopes and temperature and humidity guidelines. Disinfects scopes per protocol. Elevates critical issues promptly on this high risk process.
- Collaborates with physicians to provide for the specialized needs of the procedural patient. Builds trusting collaborative relationship with surgeons to ensure optimal outcomes. Anticipates supply equipment needs in advance so that arrangements can be made in a timely and cost effective manner.
- Works to support cost containment through supply utilization changes. Provides feedback in new equipment/product evaluations. Identifies and recommend solutions for cost savings and waste reduction.
- Participates actively in education with vendors. Ensures appropriate use of equipment and supplies per tier. Participates and assists in training and support of all team members, volunteers and students.
