Chaplain (Certified or Non-Certified)

The chaplain provides spiritual care for patients and families through direct visits. Spiritual care is also provided through regular contact with hospital team members and regular consultation with nursing, social services, and medical staff. Chaplain serves as contact with visiting clergy.

- Deliver spiritual care to patients and families, including documentation of care provided
- Interact and coordinate with visiting clergy when applicable
- Participate fully and respectfully in patient care conferences as member of the care team, collaborating with other care team members for the benefit of patients and families
- Deliver spiritual care to team members
- Consistently utilize a holistic approach to care, considering physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and relational needs
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with additional theological education
- Successful completion of at least 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as evidenced by Certificate of Completion
- Demonstrable pastoral ministry, hospital/healthcare ministry, or institutional chaplaincy
- Ecclesiastical endorsement
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
- Ability to recognize and respond to emotional and spiritual needs of persons.
- Ability to relate constructively to persons in crisis.
- Ability to relate positively to persons in various institutional roles.
- Ability to communicate personal warmth and hospitality to a variety of persons in a variety of situations.
- Ability to establish effective relationships as chaplain and colleague.
- Ability to triage the needs of patients.
- Ability to prioritize tasks using problem solving and critical thinking skills and good time management.
- Ability to manage special projects as assigned by manager.
- Ability to represent Spiritual Care team within the hospital and greater community as assigned by manager.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Keyboarding and basic computer skills.
- Mature faith and pastoral identity
- Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Seminary degree or the equivalent
- Completion of 4 units of CPE
- Pastoral ministry for at least 3 years
- Hospital ministry beyond CPE
- Certified chaplain preferred
Certified Chaplain Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in theological studies from an institution accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation
- Successful completion of four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
- 2000 hours of work experience as a chaplain following the completion of 4 units of CPE and apart from the CPE training – must include ministry commonly performed by chaplains in healthcare setting
- Certification from one of:
- Association of Professional Chaplains (APC)
- National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)
- National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
- Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education (CAPPE/ACPEP)
- Ecclesiastical endorsement
