Job description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is varied and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment. An employee in this class performs manual and semi-skilled maintenance work in several facilities. Assignments may include routine preventive maintenance and performing semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds and equipment. Duties are performed according to specific instructions from the Maintenance Manager.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Work may include but is not limited to the following examples:
- Remain alert during work hours and comply with attendance policies.
- Performs preventive maintenance and monitoring activities on equipment such as air handlers, refrigeration and air conditioning units, HVAC systems, etc.; meter and gauge readings; cleans filters and oils motors; and replaces belts, filters, switches, gauges, motors, etc.
- Paints buildings and equipment; patch plasters walls; and repairs or replaces tiles and other wall coverings.
- Repairs and constructs wood and metal equipment, furniture, doors, shelves, floors, and fixtures.
- Opens stopped sewage and drain lines; replaces or repairs faucets, toilets, sinks, valves, water lines, and other plumbing equipment and fixtures.
- Repairs and replaces electrical outlets, light fixtures, switches and other controls; performs more complex electrical work (such as working with high voltage electrical systems) with appropriate training and education.
- Repairs, adjusts and calibrates a wide variety of machines and equipment such as window air conditioners, general office equipment, automotive equipment, kitchen appliances, etc.
- Complies with all existing OSHA requirements and regulations.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of the standard tools and practices of the various trades such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry and plastering
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical and building trades
- Knowledge of OSHA requirements relating to agency facilities
- Ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled work in a variety of mechanical and building trades
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches, blueprints and penciled layouts
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Ability to work with minimum supervision
- Ability to establish and maintain positive professional relationships with staff
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a high school diploma or GED
One (1) or more years of work experience in maintenance trade or construction.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
No candidate may be considered for employment who is, or has been for the past two (2) years under the supervision of Federal, State, County or Municipal Corrections Department nor have any pending felony or misdemeanor charges other than minor traffic charges.
Driving may be required for this position. The successful candidate must have and remain in possession of a valid current driver's license, and be insurable under the agency's motor vehicle insurance policy.
