Job description
Under the supervision of the Principal, plan, organzie, and implement the appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their potential.
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK Position is responsible for creating an innovative classroom environment that fosters, promotes, and develops students' ability to apply problem-solving processes and core content knowledge to solve real-world problems creatively, leading to deeper learning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Teaches knowledge, skills, and practices in STEM and Computer Science utilizing a curriculum designed by Danville Public Schools and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instruct students in the basic tenets of engineering design, design thinking, and computational thinking.
- Works cooperatively with core and STEM teachers in a professional learning community to ensure alignment with the Virginia Standards of Learning and meet individual student needs.
- Utilizes various instructional technology, tools, and techniques identified as best practices in STEM teaching to promote student growth, creativity, and collaboration when facilitating challenge-based learning experiences that integrate multiple disciplines.
- Demonstrates self-reliance in mastering new technologies such as robotics, online instructional programs, and basic coding.
- Maintains familiarity with elementary school English, Math, and Science Virginia Standards of Learning to teach content through integration as defined by the DPS STEM curriculum.
- Fosters workplace readiness skills by strategically integrating Virginia's 5Cs into daily lesson plans.
- Engages community partners aligned to the career component outlined in each unit of study.
- Selects age-appropriate tools and materials when facilitating project-based learning.
- Provides appropriate safety instruction and maintain a copy of the DPS STEM Safety Contract on file for each student to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Maintains an organized and orderly classroom that will require accessible storage of ongoing student projects, consumable materials, technology, and STEM tools.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment for project-based learning.
- Evaluates the growth of students per the DPS Profile of a Learner, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records to include attendance reports, assessment data, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
- Communicates with parents and appropriate school staff on student progress.
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Administers testing following division testing practices.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Instruct students according to the appropriate curriculum, including assessment and review processes.
- Plan, develop, write, and implement lesson plans in keeping with school district and state education requirements, keeping records of student achievement and tracking their abilities.
- Work in collaboration with staff and other teachers.
- Comply with and enforce school rules and school board policies and procedures.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on committees as appropriate.
- Perform other school duties and assignments as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - General knowledge of the PreK-12 educational philosophy, and especially the importance of school attendance
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Must be detail-oriented and have excellent interpersonal communication skills and phone etiquette
- Strong math, science, or technology skills
EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement. Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education.Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS Significant standing, walking, moving, carrying, and bending. Handles trades workers' equipment and materials. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 11 months (220 days); 8 hours per day
EVALUATION Performance evaluation will be conducted annually by the School Principal on the effectiveness by which the employee has carried out the above responsibilities.
