Assistant/Associate Professor in Parasitology (tenure track appointment)

Position Overview:
The salary range for this position is $166,400-$216,000. 'Off-scale salaries' and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

We seek an exceptional parasitologist to support our teaching and clinical service missions and to develop an extramurally funded research program in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology (PMI) at the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). A PhD and experience in translational and collaborative research are required in areas that integrate well with the research strengths and related groups on the University of California, Davis campus. A successful career at the SVM relies on a demonstrated interest, experience, and competence in comparative medicine of parasitic disease. A DVM is preferred, but not required. Focused topics of interest for the PMI department include, but are not limited to: anthelmintic resistance, helminthology, parasite biology, ecology of transmission, management of parasitic diseases, parasite immunology and host-parasite interactions.

As PMI faculty, we have a shared goal of identifying and addressing complex factors that influence animal population health and prevention of disease. Current strengths include microbial pathogenesis and infectious disease (including the ecology of infectious disease, host-pathogen interactions, microbiology, virology, vaccinology, protozoology, immunopathology, and global health). The SVM embraces the One Health approach and offers many opportunities for collaboration on projects that span animal, human, plant, and environmental health.

Interest in diagnostic parasitology and clinical medicine is necessary since service in the diagnostic laboratory at the veterinary medicine teaching hospital comprises 10% percent of the job, see below for details about the service requirement. Experience, enthusiasm, and effectiveness in professional student education are desired. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Laboratory space and start-up funding are available.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching: The primary teaching responsibilities will be participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum with opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching and/or graduate academic programs (MS and PhD) including the Graduate Groups in Integrative Pathobiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Epidemiology and others. A demonstrated commitment to innovative teaching methods and to the training of veterinary or other biomedical scientists is preferred.
Research: Development of a creative and productive research program in relevant fields of interest is a fundamental requirement of the position, including publication of results in high quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals. The successful applicant is expected to obtain extramural funding and to direct research programs that involve professional (veterinary) students, residents, and graduate students.
Clinical: The position includes a 10% commitment to the Clinical Diagnostic Laboratories of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Parasitology. This commitment may include test development and/or interpretation, disease discovery or investigation, instruction of veterinary residents, students, and visiting scholars, providing diagnostic service, supporting client education and training for controlling parasitic diseases, or consulting with faculty clinicians. If the successful candidate has research interests aligned with the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and its mission-oriented research, a split appointment as an Agronomist in the AES is possible.
Service: The University of California has a system of shared governance. Active participation in committees, professional organizations, and other appropriate outlets is required.

Faculty members in the SVM at the University of California, Davis have abundant opportunities to collaborate with research groups within the School of Medicine, the VMTH (including the Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials), the Comparative Pathology Laboratory, the One Health Institute, the Veterinary Institute for Regenerative Cures, the California National Primate Research Center, the Genome Center, the Center for Equine Health, the California Animal Health and Food Safety laboratory system, the Center for Companion Animal Health, the Center for Food Animal Health and departments within the main UC Davis campus (such as Entomology and Nematology), among others. UC Davis is ranked 10th nationally among public universities in research funding. The city of Davis has a population of 65,000 and is situated in a beautiful pastoral setting. The University's student population is approximately 32,000. The campus lies adjacent to the city of Davis, 14 miles west of Sacramento, 72 miles northeast of San Francisco and 110 miles southwest of Lake Tahoe and the Sierras.
