Commencing with the 2024 fall semester Coastline College (CCC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure track faculty member able to teach courses in Ethnic Studies and
also in one of the following disciplines: History or Sociology. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may require instruction that is face-to-face, day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, telecourse, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Coastline College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting individualized student and employee goals.

Faculty have the opportunity to enhance their classroom methods during two professional development days during the academic year, which include learning sessions like “Digital Accessibility”, “Basic Skills: Helping students help themselves” and “Taking a skills-based approach to teaching college students”. Student-centered activities that support CCC's mission include campus-wide student success projects funded by the Office of Student Equity; partnerships with local Hispanic Serving four-year institutions; active programs that work to improve the academic achievement of racially minoritized students, such as PUENTE and UMOJA; Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS).
Coastline College serves approximately 18,000 students, awards over 2,000 degrees and certificates, and transfers over 2,000 students to four-year institutions annually. Coastline College offers two-year associate degrees and certificates. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines in Ethnic Studies and in one of the following disciplines: History or Sociology.
- Provide leadership in the development and revision of Ethic Studies curriculum responsive to the students served.
- Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
- Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
- Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
- Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; meet standards for Regular Substantive Interactions established by the district, college and department; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
- The assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.
Qualifications and Physical Demands
Minimum Qualifications - Must meet one of the following qualifications under Ethnic Studies (1) through (4) and must meet one of the following qualifications under History (1) through (4) or Sociology (1) through (4) and demonstrated expertise and experience in D.E.I. practices (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion):
Ethnic Studies: - Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
- Master's in the ethnic studies field OR
- A master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross-Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies OR
- Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.
AND History: - Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
- Master's in history OR
- Bachelor's in history AND Master's in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women's studies, social science or ethnic studies OR
- Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.
OR Sociology: - Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
- Master's in sociology OR
- Bachelor's in sociology AND Master's in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work or psychology OR
- Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.
AND - Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
Desirable Qualifications: - A minimum of two years of recent experience teaching college-level courses in both Ethnic Studies and in one of the following areas: History or Sociology.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development within the field of Ethnic Studies and in one of the following areas: History, or Sociology.
- Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, Asian American and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and the ability to examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
- Involvement in activities promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion both within the academic environment and externally, working with organizations on the local, state, national and/or international levels.
- Prior teaching experience at the community college level and an understanding and appreciation of the community college mission.
- Knowledge and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, and academic diversity within community college populations, and how these factors relate to the need for equity-minded and culturally-responsive practices in the community college setting.
- Demonstrated ability to design curriculum and learning activities to address diverse learning styles and different levels of preparation for college level work.
- Experience in building curriculum and programming in one or more of the following areas: African American/Black Studies, Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, Latina/o/x and Chicana/o/x American Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies.
- Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Commitment to self-reflect and respond to evidence-based feedback on student learning such as assessment of Student Learning Outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and/or revise courses and program curriculum.
- Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance system.
- Ability to work with computers and to use the Internet and other technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses.
- Recent successful experience in teaching courses in a distance learning format and desire to teach in this modality.
- Understanding of current and emerging instructional delivery pedagogies and technologies and ability to integrate those into the learning process.
- Strong commitment to quality teaching, student success, and academic excellence.
- Ability to contribute to campus and district-wide professional responsibilities and activities.
- Ability to positively interact with existing staff, student, and community demographics utilizing professional and personal skills.
Conditions of Employment
PAY PHILOSOPHY (Fall 2024) For a full-time, 2-semester, tenure-track position a maximum starting range of $66,190 to $112,846 is offered, based on the 2023-2024 salary schedule of $66,190 to $157,799 . In addition, an annual stipend of $3,861 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
