Position description

Civic Science Fellow - Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics

Context

The UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics (BCSP) is a multidisciplinary research and education center exploring the science of psychedelics. Amidst a contemporary resurgence of interest in psychedelics across science and society, the BCSP conducts world-leading academic research into the role and nature of psychedelics, run a training program for psychedelic facilitation, and produce agenda-setting programs of public education & journalism about psychedelic science, history, politics, culture, and therapeutic value.

With generous funding from the Dana Foundation, and program support from the Rita Allen Foundation, the BCSP is participating in the Civic Science Fellows program for the first time. Working with a Civic Science Fellow, the BCSP aims to deepen our commitment to ensuring that psychedelics are investigated for the benefit of all aspects of our society, using public engagement approaches.

Civic Science Fellows are emerging leaders from diverse demographic, cultural, and professional backgrounds. They are thought leaders, bridge builders, change agents, and communicators working to learn about community priorities and scientific research and bring those worlds together on equal footing to create fundamentally new ways of solving problems. The Fellows spend 18 months experimenting with new evidence-based approaches in science communication and community engagement in order to co-create strong, diverse, and inclusive connections between science and civic life.

The BCSP Civic Science Fellow will join our team at UC Berkeley to co-design, lead, and implement a Civic Science project at the intersection of psychedelic science and society. By examining the role of psychedelics in domains such as, but not limited to:

Mental healthcare
Racial equity
Research ethics
Neuroscience
Media literacy
Citizen science and/or underground' use of psychedelics
Indigenous knowledge and practice systems
Research agenda-setting

and in consultation with BCSP experts and stakeholders, the Fellow will decide on a Fellowship Project. This Project will meaningfully advance public engagement with psychedelic science in line with the goals of the BCSP and Civic Science Program.

Through a combination of research, practice, and public engagement, they will create at least one substantial concrete civic science work product to capture new knowledge and share it with the psychedelic science community by the end of their Fellowship. Products may include media or content, community events, learning experiences, pilot programs, research or tools, among others, and should have the potential for contributing significant new knowledge to both the field and the BCSP.

The Civic Science Fellow will also support the BCSP as an organization, be a key part of our team, make meaningful contributions to other elements of the BCSP's work, and have the opportunity to participate in the BCSP's scholarly community.
