Position: Medical Simulation Specialist
Schedule: Monday - Friday (full-time)
Pay: $50,000 Annual Salary plus Benefits
Simulation Specialist Overview:
Under the direction of the Director of
Operations in Medical Simulation, upholds the integrity of medical simulation
within the College of Medicine [COM] curriculum. Ensures that the core
curriculum prepares osteopathic medical students to function collaboratively on
health care teams. Ensures that curriculum adheres to the Society for
Simulation in Healthcare Accreditation Council (SSHAC) core standards,
providing learning experiences in academic and/or clinical environments that
permit interaction with students enrolled in other health professions degree
programs or other health professionals. Works with Associate Deans, Assistant
Deans, Chairs and faculty for medical simulation activities for our students,
as well as providing oversight for and participating in most simulation
activities.
Summary of Responsibilities:
1. Under the direction of and in collaboration with
the Director of Operations in Medical Simulation:
- Aligns Medical Simulation activities within
COM curriculum.
- Collaborates with the Director of
Operations regarding all aspects of simulation operations (budget, operations,
staffing, space and the purchase of technology), as well as, assisting in the
development of plans, short-term and long-term, to ensure best practices in the use
of simulation resources (standardized patients; low and high fidelity simulators; augmented, animated and virtual reality; and task trainers) within
the College, partner organizations and inter-professional initiatives.
- Collaborates in the development, approval,
and implementation (new project ideas, identify unmet needs, funding
opportunities) of patient-centered, medical simulation educational curricular
offerings (skills development, ethical/professional responsibility, identifying
issues, knowing when to seek guidance, report, and resolve issues) that meet or
exceed COCA and SSH standards amp; accreditation requirements to improve
teamwork and systems-based practice across professions.
- Collaborates to direct the overall
administration, programming, design, implementation and tracking of progress of
a robust formative and summative program of medical simulation activities
validating assessment tools (supervise data collection, analyses and protocols,
research, etc.) in collaboration with course directors (procedural,
scenario-based, standardized patient, objective structured clinical exam
(OSCE), other online, onsite, and community-based, large and small group) to
assure continuous quality improvement.
- Collaborates to design, implement and
supervise training (faculty, standardized patients, etc.) in medical simulation
activities promoting evidence based, effective instructional methods
(experiential learning, role-play, improvisation, case-based activities,
community participation, problem-based learning, asynchronous, etc.) in the use
of technology involved in the design, implementation or evaluation of medical
simulation.
- Oversees the creation of cooperative
working relationships with staff who have expertise in education resources,
technology and andragogy to conduct medical simulation faculty development
efforts (curricular design, faculty development, community-based and program
evaluation teams/groups) to maximize stakeholder input in developing,
implementing, and evaluating medical simulation curricula, fostering reciprocal
commitment and community engagement with participating entities (educators,
health professionals, patients, clients and community members, etc.) and their
medical simulation activities.
2. Serves as an educator ensuring the quality, integrity, and defined standards within discipline.
- Develops and delivers course content
[quality, integrity, adequacy, consistency, student use/results/impact etc.],
adhere to and exceed, as defined by the relevant governing body accreditation,
requirements and the College’s mission (identifying opportunities to build and
enhance the educational experience, providing constructive feedback,
documenting findings, etc.)
- Maintains content expertise within
discipline and contributes to the curricular model (Sequential progression,
elimination of redundancies, Blooms taxonomy) and delivery modalities of that
coursework for which the unit is responsible and recommends changes when
appropriate.
- Ensures teaching is current, appropriate
and inter-related, and where applicable, supports and builds upon previous
learning experience content (integrate emerging knowledge with practical
longitudinal clinical experience, aligning learning objectives and process)
increasing student understanding of subject matter.
- Works effectively as a team member to
enhance and improve curricula, including potential opportunities for
collaborative efforts within the department or with outside individuals,
programs, or departments; maintaining a climate hospitable to creativity and
innovation.
- Develop and maintains a working knowledge
of various teaching and assessment approaches (small group, bedside teaching,
mentoring, lecture, independent practice-based learning, evidenced based
medicine approach, simulation including institutional simulation, online
learning and interactive video scenario, standardized patient).
3. Ability to accomplish research related to simulation.
- With the direction of the Associate Dean
for Research and the Dir. of
Operations for Medical Simulation, collaborates with and/or mentors faculty,
staff and students (internal and external) to develop and implement medical
simulation research topics (including formulating concepts, brainstorming
approaches, organizing ideas, collecting, analyzing and synthesizing data) in
support of preparation of manuscrips for publication and submission for
intramural and extramural grants leading to the execution of scholarly research
(facilitating the preparation, modifying and refining of proposals and
applications, seeking external funding, developing and maintaining positive
rapport with funding agencies, etc.)
- May present on a variety of medical
simulation related research topics at various conferences locally, nationally
and internationally, including developing content, submitting for
consideration, finalizing presentation and delivering on time.
4. As relates to the department, actively
engages in the advancement of the College. At the direction of the Director of Simulation:
- Builds collaborative partnership
opportunities across and among various entities participating in networking
opportunities, (internal and external partners (elected officials, state
constitutional officers, business and community leaders), other colleges and
universities, hospitals, local organizations, societies, etc.) promoting
relationships with the College.
- Serves on various committees and teams
within the College as assigned (attending meetings, contributing to
discussions, sharing/exchanging information, and leading constituents toward
goal attainment) to include advising and mentoring (Students, clubs, campus
organizations)
- Contributes to College’s compliance with
and in the development of required documentation as related to accreditation of
the College to which departmental content is contributed. (faculty adequacy
model, gathering data, self-assessment, peer review, providing input/feedback,
etc.) aiding in the attainment of academic compliance.
- Participates in the production of various
College materials (academic calendar, strategic planning, directory, College
website, etc.) by collecting/preparing materials, organizing/formatting data,
adhering to various deadlines, reviewing drafts, providing input/feedback, etc.
- Contributes to the College’s
reputation/image of being one of the best osteopathic medical colleges through
monitoring outcomes, partnering with internal and external stakeholders,
modifying techniques, etc.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate degree (Bachelor’s degree
preferred) in a healthcare or biomedical science related field.
- Must have a
Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSiH) certification (CHSOS, CHSE and/or
CHSE-A certification) or the ability to obtain same within two years of hire.
Experience:
- Depending on level at time of hire,
preferred 2 or more years’ experience supporting educational programs or in a
healthcare education or clinical setting. Experience in an academic or clinical
simulation program in healthcare education a plus. Clinical practice or
employment in Medical Simulation at a recognized/accredited school of medicine
or school of nursing, also a plus. Prefer experience working with academic
faculty with demonstrated effectiveness, knowledge, and experience in planning,
developing and evaluating student-centered programs. Demonstrated leadership
and proven record of establishing successful collaborative programing.

- Able to lift at least 50 pounds to aid in set-up, take down, and movement of equipment.
- US citizenship or permanent residency is required.
- Innovative, resourceful, detailed oriented,
with excellent follow through skills.
Preferred skills or experience:
- Experience with use of an audio-video/textual
data capture application for simulation, such as CAE Healthcare’s Learning
Space (preferred) or similar system for television, film or theatre.
- Intermediate to deep knowledge of medical
terminology and computerized equipment.
- Intermediate to deep knowledge of human
physiology and vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respiration,
temperature, and pulse oximetry.
