Position: Farm Manager
Work Location: Worthy Environmental/Worthy Brewing - 495 NE Bellevue Drive, Bend, OR 97701
Schedule: Full time seasonal, 36-40 hours/week with flexible work days from February through October
Compensation: $22-25/hour DOE
Estimated start date: ASAP
Who We Are: Worthy Environmental is a nonprofit organization that connects people to the natural world through hands-on education and volunteer projects, cultivating a community of environmental stewards that work together to make Central Oregon a more beautiful, sustainable place to live. Housed at Worthy Brewing’s east side location, we manage a small, regenerative farm that supplies the pub with fresh seasonal produce, a native landscape that showcases the value of high desert habitat, and a research-grade telescope that makes space science accessible to the general public. We value our free and low-cost educational programming that supports local schools and community-based movements like Dark Sky Oregon and Pollinator Pathway Bend.
Job Summary: The organic farm manager takes the lead on all operations at the Worthy Organic Farm, a 3,000 square foot regenerative growing space at Worthy Brewing’s east-side pub. They are responsible for growing high-quality produce for the pub, as well as developing and executing Worthy Environmental’s community programming centered around organic growing and regenerative agriculture. They will also share some groundskeeping duties in the landscape, such as weeding, watering, pruning, planting, garbage pickup and seasonal clean-ups. There are many opportunities to become involved with other WE programs and initiatives if so qualified and desired. There is also an opportunity to be trained and mentored by our current farm manager if the applicant so wishes.

Essential Functions & Duties:
60% | Small Farm Operations
- Leads crop planning, irrigation, nutrient management, pest management, soil and crop health, equipment maintenance and record keeping for a small regenerative farm.
- Collaborates closely with Worthy Brewing kitchen staff to coordinate crop selection and harvest times, and follows through to troubleshoot logistical issues that may arise throughout the season.
- Trains kitchen staff on basic harvesting techniques.
- Manages high tunnel and greenhouse maintenance, including solar panels and automated irrigation systems
- Develops cultural field practices that improve soil and plant health in accordance with organic and regenerative agriculture techniques.
- Participates in professional development opportunities to keep abreast of current information on organic and regenerative agriculture, and is willing to research cultivation methods and strategies for crops and systems they may be unfamiliar with.
- Manages the animal husbandry of a small flock of chickens.
- Maintains a safe, clean work environment and adheres to all safety regulations.
30% | Community Education
- Works closely with the Executive Director to plan educational programs throughout the season and leads applicable workshops, field days, tours, on-farm research and demonstrations for the general public.
- Investigates niche agricultural needs in the Central Oregon community to see where Worthy Environmental can provide new opportunities to underserved populations.
- Develops partnerships with like-minded organizations and/or small businesses to explore collaborative opportunities that raise brand awareness and environmental science literacy.
- Collaborates with the Outreach and Marketing Manager to plan social media posts that educate on regenerative, closed-loop farming practices applicable to the home garden or small farm.
10% | Grounds and Event Support
- Shares alternating weekend watering duties as well as some regular landscape maintenance tasks including weeding, watering, planting, pruning, equipment maintenance, irrigation repair, garbage pickup and snow removal.
- Provides occasional staff support at community tabling events, pub talks and other events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- At least two years of education or experience in the organic agriculture field - including but not limited to crop and soil science, integrated pest management, small farm economics and organic certification.
- Ability to work independently, especially in decision-making and problem solving.
- Show proof of excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong organization, planning and collaborative skills. Applicant will be orderly with meticulous attention to detail, good at keeping track of data and not afraid to take on special projects to build their skill set.
- Ability to perform hard physical labor, including the lifting of heavy objects 50 lbs or more, in varying weather conditions with the assistance of gas-powered equipment and large hand tools.
- An understanding that their purpose within the organization is to manage a timely, organized, clean and sustainable small farm production that contains demonstration, teaching and research aspects.
- A valid driver’s license, insurable by Worthy Environmental
- Extra consideration given to those with a connection to the Central Oregon farming community and additional trade skills such as heavy equipment and tractor operation, carpentry and irrigation.
