Your Impact:

As an Accounting Manager at Vermont Rail System, you will play a vital role in the continued success and growth of our family-run business. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will immerse yourself in the intricacies of the daily financial operations unique to the freight railway industry. Your responsibilities will span a spectrum of financial activities, including supporting the management of financial statements, bank reconciliations, monthly closing processes, payroll administration, and intercompany financial transactions. This is a hands-on individual contributor position starting mostly with executional duties but designed for growth. Over time as you learn the business, you'll take on new leadership responsibilities and engage in more strategic initiatives. You will become a key, trusted partner to VRS leaders, playing a vital role in shaping the trajectory of our organization.

Your Role:

• Contribute to the preparation and analysis of financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Collaborate with the accounting team to address any discrepancies and streamline reporting processes.
• Partner with the CFO to conduct regular bank reconciliations to reconcile accounts and maintain accurate financial records.
• Build a strong and collaborative relationship with the bank in collaboration with the CFO, fostering open communication.
• Support 401k administration through third party provider, ensuring employees have offerings that meet their needs.
• Participate in the monthly closing processes, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
• Collaborate with HR to ensure compliance with payroll regulations and accurate record-keeping.
• Collaborate with the CFO to monitor and oversee intercompany financial transactions to ensure accuracy and alignment with organizational goals.
• Partner with relevant departments to address any intercompany financial issues promptly.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments to gather financial information and support strategic decision-making.
• Communicate effectively with team members and leadership to provide financial insights and recommendations.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement within the accounting function.
• Implement best practices to enhance efficiency and internal controls.

Required Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation required.
• Proven experience in accounting roles, preferably in a transportation, logistics, manufacturing, construction, or other complex service setting.
• Strong understanding of financial principles, practices, and regulations.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Comfort executing manual financial process.
• Proficiency in financial software.
• Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
