Job Description
Join our team as the Farm Supervisor and work directly alongside the Farm Director on all the day-to-day operations of the onsite culinary garden, also known as The Grange. As the Farm Supervisor you will ensure that The Grange is always thriving and beautiful, and an inspiring place for guests to visit. The role will be highly collaborative with the Farm Director, Culinary Team, and Farm Assistant. It is also very “guest-facing” so having interpersonal communication skills and being comfortable speaking in front of large groups of guests is necessary. The Grange provides fresh ingredients to all of the hotel restaurants and farm-to-table dining experiences for our guests/residents throughout the property.
- Ensure the farm is thriving and beautiful at all times. Attention to detail is a must.
- Seed, transplant, cultivate, weed, thin, and harvest vegetables, fruits, edible flowers, and herbs according to the crop plan, seeding schedule, and our kitchen’s needs
- Regularly monitor crops and identify weeds, pests, diseases, and harmful insects
- Apply natural fertilizers, pesticides, and amendments according to the spray schedule and whenever necessary to ensure a healthy farm and enhance growth
- Plant seeds into trays and ensure seeds and plants in our greenhouse our properly cared for
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of the weekly planting and harvest schedules
- Regularly organize, clean, and maintain farm tools, equipment, and bins
- Understand the Grange and greenhouse irrigation systems and oversee repairs when needed
- Water plants and seeds as needed
- Coordinate and oversee tasks being completed by our Farm Assistant(s) and point out tasks that will need to be addressed in the future
- Carefully harvest, rinse, and pack harvested products and deliver them to the kitchen in good condition, on time, and according to the established SOP’s
- Care for our flock of chickens. Tasks include cleaning the coop, cleaning the chicken run, refreshing water and food, and clipping their wings
- Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, pruning hooks, and shears, and teach other farm staff how to properly and safely use and care for each tool
- Construct trellises and plant supports
- Transport compost materials from the kitchen and Grange to our compost piles
- Operate and maintain farm vehicles and agricultural equipment and help clean them as needed.
- Load seeds, starts, amendments, and other agricultural products into trucks, and drive large trucks when needed
- Participate in culinary meetings with the culinary team to align on a harvest schedule and ensure the kitchen’s needs are met
- Identify key moments to obtain approvals from the Farm Director
Guest Programming
- Lead one-hour-long Farm Tours
- Lead 20-minute “harvest tours” for our private pasta classes and botanical cocktail classes
- Host Farm-to-table dinners and be comfortable public speaking about the farm and our culinary program to groups of up to 50 people
- Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to speak with guests about sustainable farming and the Chef’s Garden in a friendly manner and answer any questions that may arise
- Collaborate with The Farm Director, Director of Experiences, and our Chefs on unforgettable guest experiences as they relate to the farm including Farm-to-table dinners, seeding workshops, greenhouse tours, feeding the chickens, and more.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of Farming/Agriculture experience
- Self-motivated, cooperative, and flexible
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently while still caring for seeds, plants, and harvested produce
- Comfortable managing the Farm Assistant(s) daily tasks and schedule
- A flexible work schedule with the possibility of “weekends” falling mid-week
- Experience working outside in a physically demanding role with the ability to repeatedly lift 50lbs
- Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle
