The Kersten Research Group, led by Dr. Sander Kersten in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, is seeking a full-time Research Technician to support laboratory activities in molecular nutrition. Research in Dr. Kersten's laboratory is aimed at better understanding how lipid metabolism is regulated during feeding and fasting and how lipids govern specific functional outcomes and orchestrate their own metabolism. The primary focus is on the key organs relevant to lipid metabolism represented by the liver and adipose tissue, the transport of lipids to these organs, and the interplay between these organs and other relevant systems such as the immune system. A multi-pronged approach is used that ranges from dietary and physiological experiments in (genetically modified) mice and detailed mechanistic studies in vitro.

The Research Technician will work under the guidance and support of Dr. Sander Kersten to carry out molecular biology techniques, animal work, and general laboratory maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Coordinate laboratory management and routinely monitor and calibrate lab equipment and enforce lab safety protocols.
• Perform laboratory techniques such as RNA isolation, PCR, Western blotting, cell culture, flow cytometry, and microscopy.
• Support dietary/physiological studies in mice.
• Assist with the laboratory training of undergraduate and graduate students.
• Analyze research data using specific software and maintain laboratory records.
• Participate in scientific writing, presentation, and co-authoring papers.
• Participate in lab meetings, research-related discussions, and other activities.

This is a one-year appointment with a possibility of renewal depending upon satisfactory job performance and funding availability.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion , and wellbeing.
• Associate's degree and relevant experience in biomolecular sciences.
• Previous experience working in a biomolecular research laboratory setting.
• Willingness to work with and handle mice.
• Proficiency in common computer applications including Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently or as part of a team.
• Detail-oriented and thorough in completing and communicating the results of work tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science
• Previous experience with basic biomolecular techniques such as RNA isolation, PCR, Western blotting, cell culture, flow cytometry, and microscopy.
• Ability to follow, implement, and develop standard operating laboratory protocols.
• Previous experience in laboratory management.
