Position description UC Berkeley is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work in one or more areas related to the application of geostatistical methods and spatial analysis for research in climate and health. The postdoc would be part of a large, multisite, research group (Salud Urbana en America Latina - SALURBAL) involving several institutions across the United States and Latin America working on research in these two geographic areas. All SALURBAL publications are open access.
At UC Berkeley, the project is housed at the Institute of Transportation Studies and is led by a team involving Professor Daniel A. Rodriguez (City and Regional Planning) and Professor Iryna Dronova (Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning and Environmental Sciences and Policy). The postdoctoral scholar will join other researchers and postdoctoral scholars at Berkeley also working on these projects. Prior researchers are now in faculty positions at the National University of Singapore, University of Michigan, Nanjing University, University of Haifa, and Universitat Rovira i Virgili.
Job Duties:
- 50% -Conduct research activities including: leading and contributing to manuscripts; participating and potentially leading working groups on themes of interest (e.g., floods, heat, mobility; air pollution, green spaces, blue spaces).
- 30% Work with project leads at Berkeley to collect, process, and analyze relevant data; document and catalogue the data collected and developed; transmit and coordinate data analyses with other team members.
- 10% Project management and coordination. Monitoring and reporting the progress of the project components; and working with other postdoctoral scholars and SALURBAL researchers; presenting work at conferences. Organize and run internal and external virtual meetings for both projects.
- 10% -Participation in other SALURBAL activities; training and skills development; participation in UC Berkeley seminars and development opportunities; attending bi-monthly SALURBAL virtual meetings; and meeting regularly with the UC Berkeley team.

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
PhD (or equivalent international degree).
The candidate should have no more than three years of post-degree research experience.
Preferred qualifications - PhD degree or equivalent international degree in Public or Community Health, Epidemiology, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Data Science, Engineering or related fields
- Expertise in working with large spatial datasets, especially with geographic information systems (GIS) and/or Google Earth Engine
- Experience with data analysis, statistical methods and related statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, Stata, Matlab, Python)
- Interest in examining effects environmental exposures related to a changing climate on health outcomes
- Ability to synthesize the empirical literature
- Experience and interest in leading manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Detail-oriented, extremely organized, and comfortable with multitasking
- Excellent oral, written, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills Team oriented and experienced working with diverse groups of investigators and trainees
- Candidates who enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team environment valuing problem solving skills and creativity will be given particular attention.
