About the Richmond State Hospital:
Richmond State Hospital is about the people we serve and the community relationships we have developed dating back to 1890. Richmond State Hospital is a public behavioral health facility operated by the state of Indiana and one of six state psychiatric hospitals within the Family and Social Services Administration Division of Mental Health and Addiction. As part of a newly integrated system of state psychiatric hospitals, we serve consumers across the state as the Eastern Center of Excellence in Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Salary Information:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $71,500.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
About the Job:
The Clinical Director position is responsible for coordination of clinical services within Richmond State Hospital. The Clinical Director assists the organization in maintaining compliance with the provisions of active treatment and treatment planning standards established by The Joint Commission and Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services by coordinating staff resources and the overall treatment program. This position also provides direct supervision to clinical staff providing therapy services including social work, psychology, and chaplaincy departments. The position is part of the Executive and Leadership teams and works collaboratively with all departments to direct quality patient care.
A Day in the Life:
- Program development and implementation that incorporates evidence-based practices and active treatment for patients that reflect Richmond State Hospital's Model of Care.
- Collaborates with Medical Director on patient care matters.
- Responsible for role modeling leadership by participation in the following committees: Executive Team; Leadership; Governing Body; Strategic Planning; Quality Council; Medical Staff Executive Committee; and other clinical and hospital committees as required.
- Co-facilitates Admissions Committee.
- Chairs Forensic Panel and Human Rights.
- Provides direct patient care as part of active treatment, including direct facilitation of group and individual services and commiserate documentation.
- Provides support, guidance, and vision to lead the recovery model implementation.
- Demonstrates the ability to exercise good judgement and make effective, sound, timely and informed decisions seeking out those on the team to help identify, analyze, and resolve problems effectively. Skilled in managing conflict by proactively anticipating, managing, and constructively resolving conflict that may arise and lead it all toward positive change.
- Recruits, interviews, hires, supervises, develops, and retains a high-quality workforce. Promotes ongoing development of staff and own professional competencies.
- Supports and promotes efforts aimed at culture and program changes needed for continuous improvement and innovation in mental health care. Identifies specific needs for the agency and effectively presents those to the executive team for consideration.
- Manages the program components at the hospital making sure patient contact goals are being met, programs are developed that reflect needs identified in treatment goals. Adapts and is flexible and resilient in response to constraints, changing priorities, multiple demands, unanticipated events, and adversity.
- Understands the policies of the hospital and the standards set by Joint Commission and CMS that drives these policies. Is aware of the policies from DMHA, FSSA and State Personnel that drive the policy development and practices at the hospital.
- Establishes good working relationships and communication with the variety of teams served on.
- Has the ability to obtain, analyze and act on feedback from a variety of sources.
- The Clinical Director operates under the leadership of the Superintendent and is expected to take on duties as discussed and assigned.
What You'll Need for Success:
- Doctorate (PhD, PsyD) + HSPP preferred, at minimum a License and Master’s degree from an accredited college with a major in Psychology, Rehabilitation Therapy, or Social Work required.
- Four (4) years full-time professional experience and/or direct patient care to the developmentally disabled, emotionally disturbed, mentally disabled, mentally ill, or related experience. At least three (3) years of the required experience must be in an administrative, managerial, or supervisory capacity.
- Extensive knowledge of administrative, supervisory and management principles and practices.
- Must obtain CPR and CPI certification, demonstrate ability to perform techniques, and maintain certification throughout employment.
- Broad knowledge of the cause and nature of mental illness and treatment modalities, therapeutic techniques, conceptual framework and techniques and principles of behavioral sciences employed in therapeutic patient services including the roles of various clinical disciplines who serve on the treatment team.
- Knowledge of State/agency/hospital policies, practices, and procedures, as well as applicable State/Federal laws, regulations, and guidelines.
- Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care, therapeutic communication, therapeutic intervention.
- Extensive knowledge of all health, safety and sanitary regulations, treatment standards and legal rights of patients.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to compile, prepare, and maintain detailed records and reports.
- Ability to prioritize, coordinate, and complete multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to efficiently manage and motivate staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with local, community, and governmental entities, as well as other employees.
- Ability to effectively apply problem solving techniques in response to various situations, some of which may involve the security/safety of hospital patients/staff.
- Ability to plan, direct and coordinate patient/resident therapeutic programs for a diverse population.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department directors, subordinate employees, patients, families, and community agencies
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
