Job description
This position is responsible for providing training, oversight and administrative support to the OHSU Simulation/Standardized Patient Program. This position works in the OHSU Simulation Center in the Robertson Life Sciences Building, which is a 20,000 square foot facility. This position is responsible for supervision (in partnership with other SP Trainers) of 50 plus Standardized Patients (SP) who are involved in simulation throughout the whole system, set up of 20 standardized patient/clinic exam rooms, review and clarification of case studies, and web-based evaluation tools such as SimCapture. The center provides the following services to the Undergraduate Medical Education programs; administers MMIs, OSCEs, CSAs, CPX, Physical Exams, IPE training and all other standardized clinical teaching and simulation experiences within the four-year medical school curriculum. This position is also instrumental in the integration of Advanced Practice Nursing and other programs that are integrating SPs, simulation and the Simcapture technologies. This position will work in collaboration with other simulation users across the university and hospital departments including Medicine, Physician¿s Assistant, Nursing and Dental Programs, Pharmacy at OHSU along with outside entities that are interested in integrating the standards of best practices and SPs.
Administrative Functions:
- Coordinates scheduling, dry run pairings, room assignments, and assists with calendar tracking for SP (Simulated Patient) events at MRSIC, MNP, VSSTC and in situ at the Portland OHSU campus.
- Collaborate with simulation program coordinators, educators, and content experts to coordinate training schedules, simulation scenarios, and logistical requirements.
- Ensure simulated patients are adequately prepared and supported for their roles in simulation exercises.
- Manages supply orders, inventory, and prepares physical resources for training and simulations.
- Handles files, document creation, sharing, and contributes to program workflow maintenance and advancement May provide general technical trouble shooting for applications relating to SP management.
Training and Development:
- Develop comprehensive training programs and materials to equip simulated patients with the necessary skills and knowledge to portray diverse patient personas realistically.
- Design training sessions that encompass acting techniques, healthcare terminology, and scenario-specific nuances
- Deliver engaging and interactive training sessions to simulated patients, focusing on techniques for embodying patient roles authentically.
- Provide constructive feedback, coaching, and support to enhance performance quality, consistency, and adherence to simulation objectives.
- Actively prepares for clinical training experiences, including exam room setup and provisioning of materials.
- Engages in and contributes to inclusion and diversity outreach efforts.
- Creates and enhances training materials and related documentation.
Performance and Feedback:
- Leads debrief sessions and effectively implements feedback processes with SPs.
- Ensures high standards in training videos and case tracking and evaluates training effectiveness.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations of simulated patient performances to ensure alignment with simulation objectives and standards of fidelity.
- Utilize standardized evaluation criteria to provide objective feedback and identify areas for improvement.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Facilitates communication with faculty, coordinators, and learners, serving as a liaison for SPs.
- Prepares for and coordinates meetings and training sessions.
- Adheres to the Standard of Best Practice in SP methodology.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience; AND
- 1 year experience providing training, course design and web development including online courses, instructional design, technical writing, and understanding of theories, tools and methods of adult learning; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience; AND
- Strong presentation skills or public speaking experience.

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in education, healthcare, theater, or a related field
- Master’s Degree
- Active member of Association for SP Educators (ASPE) Presents annually at a conference and stays up to date on standards of best practice.
Experience:
- Five years of experience in program management or training. In addition, the experience must have included program or project monitoring and coordination and program evaluation.
- Previous experience in simulation-based education, acting, or healthcare training.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive understanding of the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practice (SOBP) and experience in their application within SP programs.
- Background in coaching, with a focus on enhancing performance, communication, and interpersonal skills, and integrating these techniques into SP training.
- Proven ability in designing and implementing training modules that adhere to ASPE SOBP guidelines, including assessment and evaluation methods.
- Demonstrated skill in mentoring and developing SPs, ensuring high-quality interactions and feedback in line with ASPE SOBP.
- Commitment to continuous professional development in SP education, staying abreast of the latest updates in ASPE SOBP and related best practices.
