Job description
The Sun Herald seeks a talented breaking news intern reporter to join its award-winning newsroom in Biloxi, one of the coolest coastal cities in the Deep South.
Join the newsroom that won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina and is known for holding those in power accountable. We are located on the Mississippi Coast, not only a lively region for news but an interesting place to live/ with an excellent quality of life. Our community has a vibrant arts and music scene, is known for its seafood and Vietnamese cuisine, and is only about an hour’s drive from New Orleans.
As our breaking news intern, we’re seeking a versatile and resourceful journalist. You’ll need a passion for crime, courts, and trending news and the drive to sift through data, dig through documents, and cultivate sources.
In this role, you will need to:
Focus on stories that build readership.
Master engaging multimedia storytelling.
Use social media as a tool to find and develop stories and connect with audiences.
Familiarize yourself with requesting court documents, police reports, and other public records.
Work well in a team environment.
The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:
Be a college student
Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and vehicle insurance.
Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment, and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
Commitment to ethics.
Ability to build source networks.
Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced, and constantly evolving.
