Director of Advocacy and Government Relations
Location : DC, Northern VA or Maryland
Salary : $100,000 - $110,000 (DOE)
The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is the Voice of Brain Injury. We are dedicated to increasing access to quality health care and raising awareness and understanding of brain injury through advocacy, education, and research. With a nationwide network of state affiliates, local chapters, and support groups, we provide help, hope, and healing to individuals who live with brain injury, their families, and the professionals who serve them.
The Director of Advocacy and Government Relations is a member of BIAA's leadership team and is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive government relations strategy to advance the organization's federal and state legislative and regulatory priorities. The Director coordinates internally across the enterprise and externally with coalition partners to achieve BIAA's policy objectives.
Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Identifies emerging policy issues at the state and federal level related to brain injury and forms appropriate positions, responses and strategies.
- Serves as BIAA's lobbyist on Capitol Hill, building relationships with Hill offices and appropriate agencies. Seeks opportunities to position BIAA as the voice of brain injury.
- Represents BIAA in Congressional hearings and health policy briefings, with letters and written testimony where required, and acts as BIAA liaison on federal coalitions.
- Grows participation in the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force , stewards relationships with leaders, and activates members in support of legislative priorities.
- Collaborates with BIAA Affiliates to identify and support opportunities to expand state-level coverage of services legislation for persons with acquired brain injury.
- Works closely with BIAA Affiliates and the communications team to promote legislative and regulatory priorities to the advocate network, to the public, and to the media.
- Plans and executes the annual Brain Injury Awareness Day on Capitol Hill (fly-in), including coordination with Affiliates and partners to engage, train, and mobilize grassroots advocates.
- Serves as the staff liaison to BIAA's Advocacy Committee.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, with Master's preferred, in public policy, political science, public administration, communications, or related field of study.
- 5-7 years of Capitol Hill experience or government and legislative affairs role in a corporate or nonprofit organization, or a combination of both.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully advocating for policy positions, mobilizing grassroots advocates to influence policy, and achieving desired outcomes in a complex stakeholder environment.
- Experience in crafting legislation.
- Executive presence and confidence that instills credibility.
